to Opotiki, and Northland. On the 10th and 11th the weather
over the South Island was mainly fair, but it deteriorated again
on the following day with the passage of another trough associated
with a very deep depression far to the south. On the 13th an anti-
cyclone covered the whole country. However, some light rain was
still reported about Cook Strait. During the next two days pressures
were again very low to the south of New Zealand. A trough of
low pressure brought rain to western and southern districts of the
South Island, and precipitation was also reported in the Auckland
Province, where moist north-easterly winds prevailed. There was
a brief general clearance with a ridge of high pressure on the 16th.
Yet another trough of low pressure moved over New Zealand
from the 17th to the 19th. Conditions deteriorated initially in
Southland and South Westland, but rain soon spread over most
of the country; it persisted on the 19th from Wellington to East
Cape following a change to southerlies. With rising pressures
there was a temporary clearance in most districts over the next
two days. However, a depression developed to the north, and some
showers were reported in Northland, Gisborne, and Bay of Plenty.
This depression became stationary over Northland from the 22nd
to the 24th, while an anticyclone was centred near the Chatham
Islands. In the moist north-easterly airstream considerable rain
occurred in the Auckland and Hawke’s Bay Provinces. During
the next three days a complex trough of low pressure moved slowly
across the country. Northerly winds brought further rain to the
Auckland Province, though somewhat lighter. In addition most
parts of the South Island received some rain.
By the 28th winds had changed to south-westerlies, and a few
showers were reported in coastal districts. On the last day of the
month an anticyclone extended over the country from the Tasman
Sea, and the weather was mainly fine.
