19 NOVEMBER
THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE
The leading front of the series became stationary just north of New Zealand, a depression formed on it in the Lord Howe area and on the 14th the front moved back over the country as a warm front.
The depression deepened and moved towards the central North Island while an intense anticyclone was moving west towards the south of New Zealand. The depression gave rain over most of the North Island on the 15th and 16th, the falls in the Hawke’s Bay area being particularly heavy. The onshore easterly winds gave rain also in the South Island, while west coast districts had fair weather.
As the depression moved off it was replaced by another which had formed near Norfolk Island on the 18th. This system moved south-eastwards bringing rain to North Auckland and Coromandel
on the 19th. Meanwhile the anticyclone which was giving fair weather in the South Island weakened and moved off to the east. Until the 23rd a south-westerly flow covered the country with the advance of an anticyclone across the Australian Bight. Meanwhile another depression had begun to move south-east towards New Zealand from the vicinity of Lord Howe Island. Rain broke out in central New Zealand on the 23rd and some heavy falls were reported in the Wellington area. The frontal system accompanying the depression moved across the North Island on the 24th and 25th. On the 26th a weak front moved on to Westland and advanced slowly over the country, reaching North Auckland by the 31st. Except in the vicinity of the front, the weather was fair and by the 31st an intense anticyclone covered most of New Zealand.
