NOTE--At stations where departures from normal have an asterisk, the temperature record has been maintained for less than ten years, the rainfall record for less than twenty years. Rainfall normals have been revised and now refer to the standard period 1921–50. Where observations are not available for the whole period, or where the site of the rain gauge has been changed, the normals are partly interpolated.

NOTES ON THE WEATHER FOR SEPTEMBER 1957

September was drier than usual in many districts. The absence of cold spells made conditions particularly favourable for lambing, except in Canterbury, where heavy losses were reported in places after wet weather early in the month. Crops and pastures made good growth.

Practically the whole country benefited from a spell of sunny, settled weather lasting from about the 7th to the 17th.

Rainfall: Rainfall was about half the normal value over the greater part of the country. In Southland totals were exceptionally low. Gore received only 0·18 in., the lowest total for any month in fifty years of record; while for Invercargill with 0·57 in. it was the driest September in sixty years of observation.

It was wetter than usual in eastern districts from Gisborne to Oamaru and also about Cook Strait.

Temperatures: Temperatures were 1 to 2 degrees above normal over most of the North Island, and also on the West Coast and in Central Otago. Over the remainder of the South Island they were about normal.

Sunshine: Sunshine was about average in eastern districts of the South Island and over much of the North Island. Over the greater part of the South Island and also in Northland and Taranaki totals were better than average by 20 to 30 hours.

Weather Sequence: A depression had moved on to Northland from the north at the end of August, and its south-eastward movement on the first two days of September brought rain to the North Island. By the 3rd another centre had developed to the west of Cook Strait, while pressure was high to the south. In the resultant easterly airstream rain spread to eastern districts of the South Island, with some heavy falls in Canterbury. The complex low pressure system remained almost stationary for several days, causing further dull, misty, and unsettled weather in eastern districts. With rising pressures there was a clearance in the south on the 7th, but showers were reported in Gisborne for another two days.

By contrast, from about the 8th to the 17th a large anticyclone covered the New Zealand area, bringing a spell of sunny, settled weather. The only part of the country which failed to benefit was Northland, where showers occurred in the easterly winds. Some rain was also reported on the Southland coast on the 15th.

On the 18th and 19th a depression passed close to Southland, and the associated trough of low pressure moved eastward across the country, with rain mainly in western districts. During the next four days another depression crossed the North Island with rain, heavy in Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay on the 22nd. The 24th was mainly fair except in South Westland and Fiordland, but a general deterioration commenced on the following day as a trough of low pressure moved on to Southland. This trough soon became almost stationary through Cook Strait, and a small depression formed which crossed the southern half of the North Island. These last days of September were rather unsettled, but Northland and most of Southland received very little rain.
