Alterations to the Scales of Charges Upon the New Zealand Government Railways

Pursuant to the Government Railways Act 1949, the New Zealand Railways Commission hereby makes the following alterations to the General Scale of Charges made on the 26th day of March 1952 and published in the Supplement dated the 9th day of April 1952 to the New Zealand Gazette of the 3rd day of April 1952, and to the Local Rates Scale of Charges made on the 4th day of May 1954 and published in the Supplement dated the 12th day of May 1954 to the New Zealand Gazette of the 6th day of May 1954, in force on the New Zealand Government Railways and hereby declares that such alterations shall come into force on the 11th day of November 1956.

General Scale of Charges

Passengers

The fares and rates set out in regulations 1 to 35 inclusive with the exceptions indicated hereafter, are increased by 10 per centum; minimum increase 1d. The fares and rates so calculated are then rounded to the next 6d.

Exceptions—The fares and rates embodied in the following regulations are not increased:

2. Ordinary Tickets

In addition to the increase of 10 per centum provided herein, amounts up to 1s. 3d. per single ticket and 2s. 6d. per return ticket are incorporated in each fare to cover seat reservations.

6. Special Excursion Tickets

Paragraph 2: Fares set out in this paragraph are increased to the level of the fares provided in regulation 2, less 10 per centum.

7. Day Excursion Tickets

In addition to the increase of 10 per centum provided herein, an amount of 1s. 3d. per ticket is incorporated in each fare to cover seat reservations.

8. Miscellaneous Concession Fares

Paragraphs 11 and 13: Under the heading “Conditions” omit the words “Single tickets—at four-fifths of the ordinary single fare (Regulation 2),” and substitute “Single tickets—at the ordinary single fare (Regulation 2) less 10 per centum.”

24. Reserved Seats

Paragraph 1: Omit this paragraph and substitute:

  1. Passengers holding rail tickets and travelling by the under-mentioned trains, may reserve seats free of charge, subject to the provisions of Regulation 30:
    (a) By the night “Limited” express trains between Auckland and Wellington: Provided that seats will not be reserved for a journey of less than one hundred miles except between Auckland and Frankton and between Palmerston North and Wellington.
    (b) By all other express trains.
    (c) By such other passenger-trains and railcar services as the General Manager may determine.
    Insert new Paragraph 1A:

1A. Seats will not be reserved for holders of tickets issued under the provisions of Regulations 4, 5, 32, 33, 34, and 35.
