No. 4
Another five days of fine weather commenced on the 19th as an anticyclone to the south-west extended its influence over the country. Later the main centre moved slowly north-eastwards just off the east coast. Barometers were still high over New Zealand on the 24th and 25th, but welcome rain was reported on the Southland coast and in some eastern districts during the northward passage of a weak trough. Pressures soon commenced to rise rapidly far to the south-west, and at the same time a depression developed near the Chatham Islands. As a result on the 26th and 27th a rather cold south-easterly airstream covered most of the country, bringing further rain on the east coast.
The anticyclone which had developed far to the south-west moved rapidly north-eastwards and was centred east of the South Island by the 28th. During its slow eastward passage on the last four days of the year holiday makers in most districts benefited from a spell of fine weather. However, a tropical cyclone south-east of Noumea was moving slowly southwards, and in Northland easterly winds of strong to gale force were reported, with frequent periods of light rain, mainly on the east coast.
