✨ Weather Summary and Bank Returns
24 MAY THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE 697
For the next twelve days pressure was high to the north, and depressions passed to the south-west and south of the South Island. Westerly conditions prevailed, with persistently unsettled weather in western districts, extending as far as the Auckland Province. Thunderstorms were reported on at least six days. In most districts the worst weather occurred on the 20th during the passage of a vigorous trough associated with a deep depression in the south. On that day no less than three small tornadoes were reported in Westland, while local flooding occurred in Taranaki and the King Country.
On the 23rd a depression moved from the central Tasman Sea to a position off the Westland coast. Most of the country north of Oamaru was affected, but in the east rain was still only light.
Flooding was reported near Greymouth. As the depression lost intensity on the two following days the weather improved slowly, but there were still showers in western districts, especially in the North Island. From the 26th to 28th another depression over the central Tasman Sea moved south-eastward to the south-west of Southland, and there was a return to westerly conditions. However, on this occasion the North Island received hardly any rain.
On the 29th an anticyclone moved on to the South Island. For the last two days of the month the weather was cooler, but fair or fine, except for showers in Northland and the Coromandel Peninsula.
