Assumption of the Administration of the Government of New Zealand by Major-General the Right Honourable Sir Harold Eric Barrowclough, Chief Justice

A PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS His late Majesty King George V was graciously pleased, by Letters Patent passed under the Great Seal of the United Kingdom, and bearing date at Westminster the 11th day of May 1917, to constitute the office of Governor-General and Commander-in-Chief in and over New Zealand: And whereas Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was pleased, by a Commission passed under the Royal Sign Manual and Signet, bearing date at Saint James’s the 6th day of November 1952, to appoint Lieutenant-General Sir Charles Willoughby Moke Norrie to be Governor-General and Commander-in-Chief in and over New Zealand during Her Majesty’s pleasure: And whereas His late Majesty King George V was pleased, by a Commission passed under the Royal Sign Manual and Signet, bearing date at Saint James’s the 23rd day of July 1917, amongst other things, to appoint the Chief Justice of New Zealand for the time being to administer the Government thereof in the case of the death, incapacity, or removal, or of the departure from New Zealand of the Governor-General appointed under the said Letters Patent, with all and singular the powers and authorities granted by the said Letters Patent: And whereas the said Lieutenant-General Sir Charles Willoughby Moke Norrie departed from New Zealand upon leave of absence on the 9th day of April 1956:

Now, therefore, I, Major-General Sir Harold Eric Barrowclough, Member of Her Majesty’s Most Honourable Privy Council, Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George, Companion of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, Companion of the Distinguished Service Order, on whom has been conferred the Military Cross and the Efficiency Decoration, the Chief Justice of New Zealand, hereby proclaim and declare that I have this day taken the oaths prescribed by the said Letters Patent before the Honourable Kenneth Macfarlane Gresson, one of the Judges of the Supreme Court of New Zealand, and that I have assumed the administration of the Government of New Zealand under and by virtue of His late Majesty’s said Commission.

Given under the hand of His Excellency the Administrator of the Government, and issued under the Seal of New Zealand, this 9th day of April 1956.
