Board of Trade Notice No. 120—Review of the Customs Tariff

NOTICE is hereby given—

(a) That the Board of Trade proposes to inquire into the Customs Tariff of New Zealand and to recommend for consideration of the Government any alterations therein having regard to:

(i) The general financial, economic, and industrial conditions in, and requirements of, New Zealand:

(ii) The interests of the primary and manufacturing industries and of consumers:

(iii) The existing trade agreements to which New Zealand is a party.

(b) That companies, firms, organisations, or persons desirous of making representations concerning the general principles which should be followed in the review of the Customs Tariff, may do so by sending a statement in writing (20 copies) addressed to the undersigned so as to reach him on or before the 24th day of April 1956. Those who send in statements should at the same time advise whether or not they wish to read them in public and be examined upon them by members of the Board.

(c) That the Board of Trade will hold a sitting in public commencing on Tuesday, 1 May 1956, at 10.30 a.m., in the Board Room, First Floor, Departmental Building, Stout Street, Wellington, to hear those persons who have advised that they wish to read their statements. Such persons will be subject to examination only by members of the Board.

Notice is also given that any company, firm, organisation, or person desiring to make representations to the Board of Trade regarding the Customs Tariff in respect of particular goods should submit such representations so as to reach the undersigned on or before the 6th day of July 1956. Such representations should relate only to the Tariff and should not relate to import licensing. Forms in accordance with which such representations should be made may be obtained from the office of any Collector of Customs or from the undersigned as soon as printed, probably by the middle of April. Parties who have made representations regarding particular goods may peruse any non-confidential information submitted to the Board. Others may be permitted to peruse such information only at the discretion of the Board. The representations relating to particular goods will not be the subject of public examination unless the Board, for special reasons, thinks it necessary.
