Weather and Maori Adoptions

No. 48

From the 18th to the 20th most districts benefited from an anticyclone moving slowly across the country, but showers were still reported from some areas, especially in the Wellington Province. Another general deterioration occurred during the next three days with the passage of a shallow complex depression from the Tasman Sea. On the 24th an anticyclone was centred to the south-west, and the weather improved temporarily, except in Northland, which was affected by another depression. On the 25th and 26th pressures were low to the north and east, and a bitterly cold southerly airstream covered New Zealand, with showers in eastern districts.

Yet another depression from the Tasman Sea moved on to Northland on the 27th with heavy rain, causing flooding at Whangarei. On the last three days of the month most of the South Island benefited from a weak ridge of high pressure, but barometers remained low in the north and there was further rain at times in Northland and in some coastal districts of the North Island. At the end of the month there was a general deterioration with the approach of a deepening depression from the north-west, and rain spread over the North Island.
