north-easterly winds caused damage in the Bay of Plenty. Rain was
lighter on the following day as the depressions lost intensity, and on
the 17th there was fair weather again with the passage of an anti-
cyclone across the country.

The anticyclone moved south-eastward, and with the approach of
a very deep depression from the Central Tasman Sea conditions
deteriorated on the West Coast on the 18th. For the next two days
rain was general, and the passage of the depression just west of
Southland on the 19th caused strong northerly gales over the South
Island. The weather remained unsettled on the 21st and 22nd, with a
change to southerly winds accompanied by colder temperatures. For
the next four days an anticyclone was centred over the Western

Tasman Sea and pressure remained low to the south and south-east.
A south-westerly airstream covered the country, bringing shower-
conditions to the Auckland Province, to western districts of both
islands, and to the far south.

By the 27th the anticyclone had moved into the Eastern Tasman
Sea, and there were three days of fine weather during its passage
across New Zealand. Rain set in over the Auckland Province on the
30th as a depression over the North Tasman Sea moved on to North-
land, and the deterioration became general on the following day,
with the formation of another depression west of Southland.
