Rangitaiki Land Drainage District—Notice of Making and Levying Rates
PURSUANT to the Rangitaiki Land Drainage Act 1910 and its amendments, the Minister of Lands does hereby make and levy, on the unimproved value of all land within the district constituted under the said Act, the general rates to meet maintenance costs for the period 1 April 1954 to 31 March 1955, as described in the Schedule hereto.
The amount of such rates will be payable in one sum on 30 August 1954, together with the amount of the annually recurring special rates already made and levied, to the Collector of Rates, Room 8, First Floor, Government Buildings, Customs Street West, Auckland.
The rate book of the district will be open for inspection at the office of the Collector of Rates, and a copy of same may be inspected at the Land Drainage Office of the Ministry of Works at Thornton, near Whakatane, at all times at which those offices are open for the transaction of public business.
SCHEDULE
CLASS A: On the unimproved value of all lands classified as Class A by the arbitrators appointed under section 6 of the Rangitaiki Land Drainage Act 1910, sixpence and fifty-eight one-hundredths of a penny (6.58d.) in the pound.
CLASS B: On the unimproved value of all lands so classified as Class B, fourpence and thirty-nine one-hundredths of a penny (4.39d.) in the pound.
CLASS C: On the unimproved value of all lands so classified as Class C, twopence and nineteen one-hundredths of a penny (2.19d.) in the pound.
CLASS D: On the unimproved value of all lands so classified as Class D, seventy-three one-hundredths of a penny (0.73d.) in the pound.

Approval of Testing Officer Under the Motor Drivers Regulations 1940
PURSUANT to regulation 5 of the Motor Drivers Regulations 1940, the Minister of Transport hereby approves of the person named in Column 2 of the Schedule hereunder being a testing officer under the said regulations for the authority specified in Column 1 of the said Schedule.

Exemption Order Under the Motor Drivers Regulations 1940
PURSUANT to the Motor Drivers Regulations 1940, the Minister of Transport hereby orders and declares that the provisions of clause (1) of regulation 7 of the said regulations so far as they relate to the driving of heavy trade motors shall not apply to the persons hereinafter mentioned, but in lieu thereof the following provision shall apply:
A motor driver's licence issued under the Motor Drivers Regulations 1940 to the persons described in Column 1 of the Schedule hereunder may authorize them to drive a heavy trade motor in the course of their employment for the employers described in Column 2 of the said Schedule, but shall not authorize them while they are under the age of eighteen years to drive a heavy trade motor for any other purpose.

Board of Trade Notice No. 94—Public Inquiry into Import Duties on Button Sets
- The Board of Trade proposes to inquire into and report upon the question of what rates of import duty should be imposed on the goods mentioned hereunder and included in the following tariff items:
Ex Tariff Item 161: Buttons imported in sets which include (a) buckles or slides (other than metal buckles or slides); or (b) other articles classified under this tariff item.
Ex Tariff Item 311: Buttons imported in sets which include buckles and similar articles of metal classified under this tariff item.
The present rates of import duty in respect of these items are:
Tariff Item 161—
British Preferential: 20%.
Most Favoured Nation: 40%.
General: 45%.*
Tariff Item 311—
British Preferential: 3%.
General: 25%.*
- Plus surtax at the rate of nine-fortieths of the amount of duty.

During the course of this inquiry the Board will consider the desirability of reclassifying the goods in question for the purposes of the Customs Tariff. In addition, the Board will consider any representations which may be made in favour of the re-imposition of import licensing over all or any of the goods in question.

For the purpose of taking evidence on the review of these tariff items, the Board will hold a public inquiry commencing on Tuesday, 5 October 1954, at 10.30 a.m., in the Board Room, First Floor, Departmental Building, Stout Street, Wellington.

Any person who intends to tender evidence should comply with the notes for the guidance of witnesses (2nd edition) which have been approved by the Board. A copy of these notes may be obtained from the office of any Collector of Customs or from the undersigned.

A typewritten statement of the evidence to be tendered, compiled in accordance with these notes of guidance, should be lodged with the undersigned on or before Tuesday, 21 September 1954. Each statement will in general need to be presented under oath at the public inquiry by the person tendering it.
