1 Oct.]\n\nTHE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE\n\nBoard of Trade Notice No. 73—Public Inquiry into Import\nDuties on Pipes, &c.\n\n1. The Board of Trade proposes to inquire into and\nreport upon the question of what rates of import duty should\nbe imposed under the following tariff items:\n\nTariff Item 216: Drainage-pipes, drainage-tiles, conduit-\npipes, and chimney pots, of earthenware, concrete, or\nsimilar materials.\n\nTariff Item 362: Pipes, piping, tubes, and tubing (except\ncoil pipes), viz.:\n\n(1) Wrought iron, steel, or wood, n.e.i., (including\nsuch pipes or tubes when protected with a\ncement or similar coating) not less than 4 in.\nbut less than 9 in. in internal diameter.\n\n(2) (a) Cast iron, n.e.i., including rain-water,\nsoil, and similar pipes.\n\n(b) (i) Centrifugally cast iron pipes, piping,\ntubes, and tubing, exceeding 6 in. but\nnot exceeding 12 in. in nominal internal\ndiameter.\n\n(ii) Centrifugally-cast iron pipes, piping,\ntubes, and tubing, not less than 4 in.\nbut not exceeding 6 in. in nominal\ninternal diameter.\n\n(3) (a) Wrought iron or steel, screwed, boiler tubes,\nflanged or unflanged; and all pipes,\npiping, tubes, and tubing, n.e.i. (excluding\ngalvanized iron or steel flush pipes).\n\n(b) Galvanized iron or steel flush pipes.\n\n(5) Knees, bends, elbows, junction or inspection boxes\nincluding covers therefor, and other\nfittings, n.e.i., for pipes, piping, tubes, or\ntubing, viz.:\n\n(a) Of brass or other copper alloy.\n\n(b) Of cast iron for rain-water, soil, and\nsimilar pipes.\n\n(6) Knees, bends, elbows, junction or inspection boxes\nincluding covers therefor, and other fittings,\nn.e.i., for any of the above-mentioned pipes,\npiping, tubes, or tubing, shall be classed under\nthe same item of the Tariff as the pipes, piping,\ntubes, and tubing for which they are fittings.\n\nThe present rates of import duty in respect of these\nitems are:\n\nTariff Item 216:\n\nBritish Preferential: 3%.\nAustralian Agreement: 25%.\nGeneral: 45%.\n\nTariff Item 362 (1):\n\nBritish Preferential: 20%.\nMost Favoured Nation: 35%.\nSwitzerland: 35%.\nGeneral: 40%.\n\nTariff Item 362 (2) (a):\n\nBritish Preferential: Free.\nMost Favoured Nation: 20%.\nSwitzerland: 20%.\nGeneral: 40%.\n\nTariff Item 362 (2) (b) (i):\n\nBritish Preferential: Free.\nAustralian Agreement: 20%.\nMost Favoured Nation: 20%.\nSwitzerland: 20%.\nGeneral: 40%.\n\nTariff Item 362 (2) (b) (ii):\n\nBritish Preferential: 20%.\nMost Favoured Nation: 35%.\nSwitzerland: 35%.\nGeneral: 40%.\n\nTariff Item 362 (3) (a):\n\nBritish Preferential: Free.\nMost Favoured Nation: 20%.\nSwitzerland: 20%.\nGeneral: 20%.\n\nTariff Item 362 (3) (b):\n\nBritish Preferential: Free.\nMost Favoured Nation: 20%.\nSwitzerland: 20%.\nGeneral: 20%.\n\nTariff Item 362 (5) (a):\n\nBritish Preferential: Free.\nMost Favoured Nation: 20%.\nSwitzerland: 20%.\nGeneral: 40%.\n\nTariff Item 362 (5) (b):\n\nBritish Preferential: 20%.\nMost Favoured Nation: 35%.\nSwitzerland: 35%.\nGeneral: 40%.\n\n Plus surtax at the rate of nine-fortieths of the amount of\nduty.\n\n2. During the course of this inquiry the Board will con-\nsider the desirability of reclassifying the goods in question\nfor the purposes of the Customs Tariff. In addition, the\nBoard will consider whether such of the goods in question as\nare now subject to import licensing should be exempted from\nthe requirements of import licensing, and in respect of such\nof the goods in question as are already exempt whether\nimport licensing should be reimposed in respect of any of\nthem.\n\n3. For the purpose of taking evidence on the review of\nthese tariff items, the Board will hold a public inquiry com-\nmencing on Tuesday, 1 December 1953, at 10.30 a.m., in the\nBoard Room, First Floor, Departmental Building, Stout Street,\nWellington.\n\n4. Any person who intends to tender evidence should\ncomply with the notes for the guidance of witnesses (2nd\nedition) which have been approved by the Board. A copy of\nthese notes may be obtained from the office of any Collector\nof Customs or from the undersigned.\n\n5. A typewritten statement of the evidence to be tendered,\ncompiled in accordance with these notes of guidance, should\nbe lodged with the undersigned on or before Tuesday, 17\nNovember 1953. Box 2424, Wellington C. 1.\n\nBoard of Trade Notice No. 74\nNOTICE is hereby given: (a) That the Board of Trade\nhas reviewed Board of Trade Notice No. 29 of 23 June\n1952 (published in Gazette No. 45 of 3 July 1952), wherein\nit was stated that a recommendation would not be made to\nexempt the following goods from import licensing until a\nreview of the appropriate tariff duties had taken place:\n\nTariff Item Description\nEx 357 (10) (a) Wire, metal, plain, n.e.i., viz.: non-\nferrous (excluding nickel chrome\nresistance wire); baling wire, plain\nfencing wire, and plain barbing\nwire.\n\n(b) That the Board of Trade has determined that as\nbaling wire, plain fencing wire, and plain barbing wire'\nare not made in New Zealand, the Board may recommend them\nfor exemption from import licensing without a tariff review.\n(c) That the said notice of 23 June 1952 is accordingly\namended by deleting therefrom the wordsbaling wire, plain\nfencing wire, and plain barbing wire'.\n\nDated at Wellington, this 28th day of September 1953.\nR.
