German 'Loss Assessments' and 'Equalization of
Burdens' Laws
THE Minister of External Affairs has been informed that
under legislation recently enacted by the Federal German
Republic (the Loss Assessment and Equalization of Burdens
Laws) persons owning certain classes of property in West
Germany or the Western Sectors of Berlin which suffered
physical damage during the Second World War may make
application for assessment of the extent of such damage as a
preliminary to compensation. Damage must be in excess of
500 RM, except in the case of household goods, and applications
must be submitted before 18 August 1953. Application
forms and information concerning the interpretation or operation
of these laws may be obtained from the authorities of
the Parish (Gemeinde) in which the property was located or
from the nearest German representative overseas. In the
case of New Zealand applicants this would be the German
Embassy, Sydney.
