Assumption of the Office of Governor-General and Commander-in-Chief of New Zealand by
Lieutenant-General Sir Charles Willoughby Moke Norrie

A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was graciously pleased, by a Commission
passed under the Royal Sign Manual and Signet, bearing date at Saint James’s
the 6th day of November 1952, to appoint me, Sir Charles Willoughby Moke Norrie, to be
Governor-General and Commander-in-Chief in and over New Zealand :
Now, therefore, I, the Governor-General and Commander-in-Chief aforesaid, hereby
proclaim and declare that I have this day taken the prescribed oaths before the Right
Honourable Sir Humphrey Francis O’Leary, Chief Justice of New Zealand, and that I
have assumed the said office of Governor-General and Commander-in-Chief in and over
New Zealand under and by virtue of Her Majesty’s said Commission.
Given under the hand of His Excellency Sir Charles Willoughby Moke Norrie,
Knight Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and
Saint George, Companion of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath,
Companion of the Distinguished Service Order, upon whom has been conferred
the Decoration of the Military Cross and Bar, Lieutenant-General on the
retired list of Her Majesty’s Army, Governor-General and Commander-in-
Chief in and over New Zealand ; and issued under the Seal of New Zealand,
this 2nd day of December 1952.
