(d) If it be recommended that any such compensation should
be so granted, then to report for whose benefit, that
is to say, that of any particular Maori, hapu, tribe, or
other group or class of Maoris, and in what manner,
the amount of such compensation should be appropriated
and applied :
(e) If it be recommended that any compensation should be
so granted, then to report whether any terms or con-
ditions, whether as to the abandonment or surrender
of any rights or otherwise, should attach to the grant
of such compensation.
And for the better enabling you to carry these presents into
effect, you are hereby authorized and empowered to make and
conduct any inquiry under these presents at such times and places
as you deem expedient, with power to adjourn from time to time
and place to place as you think fit, and so that these presents shall
continue in force, and the inquiry may at any time and place be
resumed although not regularly adjourned from time to time or
from place to place :
And you are hereby strictly charged and directed that you shall
not at any time publish or otherwise disclose save to His Excellency
the Governor-General, in pursuance of these presents or by His
Excellency’s direction, the contents of any report so made or to
be made by you or any evidence or information obtained by you
in the exercise of the powers hereby conferred upon you except
such evidence or information as is received in the course of a sitting
open to the public :
And, using all due diligence, you are required to report to His
Excellency the Governor-General in writing under your hand not
later than the thirtieth day of September, one thousand nine hundred
and fifty, your findings and opinions on the matters aforesaid,
together with such recommendations as you think fit to make in
respect thereof :
And, lastly, it is hereby declared that these presents are issued
under the authority of the Letters Patent of His late Majesty dated
the eleventh day of May, one thousand nine hundred and seventeen,
and under the authority of and subject to the provisions of the
Commissions of Inquiry Act, 1908, and with the advice and consent
of the Executive Council of the Dominion of New Zealand.
In witness whereof We have caused this Our Commission to
be issued and the Seal of Our Dominion of New Zealand to be
hereunto affixed at Wellington, this twenty-fifth day of January,
in the year of Our Lord, one thousand nine hundred and fifty,
and in the fourteenth year of Our Reign.

HIS Excellency the Governor-General has been pleased to
approve of the following appointments, promotions, trans-
fers, resignations, and retirements of officers of the New Zealand
Military Forces :—
THE ROYAL N.Z. ARTILLERY
Regular Force—
The notice published in the N.Z. Gazette No. 5, dated 26th
January, 1950, relative to the appointment of Jack Beazer Gabbetis
(late Captain, Royal Artillery), is hereby cancelled.
Territorial Force—
Temp. Major G. S. Richards, from the Reserve of Officers,
Supplementary List, to be Major, with seniority from 11th June,
1947, and is posted to the 10th Coast Regiment, R.N.Z.A. Dated
1st December, 1948.
Captain R. M. Smith, from the Retired List, to be Captain,
with seniority from 15th August, 1947, and is posted to the 1st
Heavy Mortar Battery, R.N.Z.A. Dated 1st October, 1949.
Temp. Lieutenant R. K. Barron, from the Reserve of Officers,

Temp. Lieutenant S. R. J. McCluggage, 2nd Field Regiment,
R.N.Z.A., is posted to the Retired List with the rank of Lieutenant.

THE ROYAL N.Z. ARMOURED CORPS
Territorial Force—
Captain A. T. Caley, from the Retired List, to be Captain,
with seniority from 19th November, 1948, and is posted to the
1st Armoured Regiment, R.N.Z.A. (Waikato). Dated 1st December,
1948.
With reference to the notice published in the N.Z. Gazette
No. 30, dated 19th May, 1949, relative to Captain R. Penney, for
“with seniority from 12th November, 1944,” substitute “with
seniority from 8th November, 1947.”
THE ROYAL N.Z. CORPS OF SIGNALS
Territorial Force—
Lieutenant L. A. Murtagh, 1st Composite Squadron, R.N.Z. Sigs.,
to be Captain and is appointed O.C. 1st Composite Squadron,
R.N.Z. Sigs. Dated 1st December, 1948.
Temp. Lieutenant R. J. H. Leete, 1st Composite Squadron,
R.N.Z. Sigs., is transferred to the Reserve of Officers, General
List, The Royal N.Z. Corps of Signals, with the rank of Lieutenant,
with seniority from 11th March, 1946. Dated 1st May, 1949.
Temp. 2nd Lieutenant S. Ringer, 1st Composite Squadron,
R.N.Z. Sigs., is transferred to the Reserve of Officers, General
List, The Royal N.Z. Corps of Signals, with the rank of 2nd
Lieutenant, with seniority from 1st September, 1942. Dated 1st

The Auckland Regiment (Countess of Ranfurly’s Own)—
Temp. Captain R. P. K. Kania ceases to be seconded to the
Takapuna Grammar School Cadets and is transferred to the Reserve
of Officers, General List, The Royal N.Z. Infantry Corps, with the
rank of Captain, with seniority from 6th July, 1942. Dated 17th
November, 1949.
Neville Athol Channon McMillan to be 2nd Lieutenant (on
prob.) and is posted to the Mount Albert Grammar School Cadets.
Dated 19th October, 1949.
The North Auckland Regiment—
Lieutenant C. T. Martindale, from the Reserve of Officers,
Supplementary List, to be Lieutenant, with seniority from 28th
December, 1943, and is posted to the 1st Battalion. Dated 1st
December, 1948.
2nd Lieutenant H. G. Matthews, 1st Battalion, to be Lieutenant.
Dated 9th October, 1949.
The Waikato Regiment (disbanded)—
Temp. Captain J. H. Macky, 1st Battalion, is posted to the
