Special Order Made by the Whakatane County Council Altering
Riding Boundaries
Department of Internal Affairs,
Wellington, 15th August, 1950.
THE following Special Order made by the Whakatane County
Council is published in accordance with the provisions of the
Counties Act, 1920, insofar as publication is required by that Act.
Pursuant to section 100 of the aforesaid Act, as amended by sec-
tion 3 of the Counties Amendment Act, 1921-22, I hereby fix the
lst day of October, 1950, as the date from which the redivision
of the County into ten ridings as set out in the said Special Order
shall take effect.

SPECIAL ORDER
THAT in exercise of the powers conferred on it by section 23 of the
Counties Act, 1920, and all other powers whatsoever it thereunto
enabling, the Whakatane County Council hereby resolves by way
of Special Order as follows :
“ That the present subdivision of the County of Whakatane
into nine ridings be revoked and in lieu thereof the said County
be divided into ten ridings, to be called respectively Galatea, Matata,
Omataroa, Ohope, Taneatua, Waimana, Nukuhou, Urewera, Tara-
wera, and Rangitaiki, the boundaries whereof are respectively
described in the Schedule hereto.”
SCHEDULE
Galatea Riding
ALL that area in the South Auckland Land District, situated in
the County of Whakatane, bounded by a line commencing at a
point in Block XV, Rotoma Survey District, being the south-western
corner of part of Allotment 63 of the Parish of Matata, and running
easterly generally along the southern boundaries of Matata and
Tarawera Ridings, to the left bank of the Rangitaiki River;
thence southerly generally along the western boundary of the
Urewera Riding to the southern boundary of the County of
Whakatane ; thence westerly and northerly generally along the
southern and western boundaries of the County of Whakatane, as
described in the New Zealand Gazette No. 52, of the 10th day of
August, 1950, page 1566, to the point of commencement.
Matata Riding
All that area in the South Auckland Land District, situated
in the County of Whakatane, bounded by a line commencing at a
point in Block IV, Waihi South Survey District, on the shores of
the Bay of Plenty, being the north-eastern corner of Waewaehikitia
No. 1 Block, and running south-easterly generally along the shores
of the Bay of Plenty, aforesaid, to the left bank of the Tarawera
River Diversion ; thence south-westerly generally up the left bank
of the Tarawera River Diversion, aforesaid, to and up the left
bank of the Tarawera River to a point in line with the southern
boundary of Allotment 39, Matata Parish ; thence westerly generally
along a right line to and along the southern boundary of Allotment
39, aforesaid, and along the southern boundary of the Provisional
State Forest, as described in the New Zealand Gazette No. 65, of
the 8th day of July, 1920, page 2107, to the western boundary of
the County of Whakatane ; thence northerly generally along the
western boundary of the County of Whakatane, as described in the
New Zealand Gazette No. 52, of the 10th day of August, 1950, page
1566, to the point of commencement.
Omataroa Riding
All that area in the South Auckland Land District, situated
in the County of Whakatane, bounded by a line commencing at a
point in Block 1A, Whakatane Survey District, on the shores of
the Bay of Plenty, being the northernmost corner of Allotment
28B l, Parish of Rangitaiki, and running south-easterly generally
along the aforesaid shores to the south-western corner of part of
Allotment 245 of the Parish of Waimana, as shown on the plan
numbered 12340, deposited in the Auckland Land Registry Office
(Signal Station Reserve); thence southerly generally along the
north-western and south-western boundaries of the Borough of
Whakatane as described in the New Zealand Gazette No. 52, of
the 10th day of August, 1950, page 1566, to the north-western corner
of Lot 1, as shown on the plan numbered 18662, deposited as aforesaid,
being part of Allotment 10A, Parish of Waimana, aforesaid; thence
along a right line across the Whakatane River to the easternmost
corner of Lot 2, as shown on the plan numbered 13465, deposited
as aforesaid, being part of Allotment 30c 2c, of the Parish of Rangi-
taiki; thence up the left bank of the Whakatane River, aforesaid,
to the north-eastern corner of Lot 2, as shown on the plan numbered
10785, deposited as aforesaid, being part of Allotment 33K of the
aforesaid Parish of Rangitaiki; thence westerly generally along
the northern boundary of Lot 2, aforesaid, to and along the northern
boundary of Lot 1, as shown on the plan numbered
11736, deposited as aforesaid, being part of Allotment 33J, of the
said parish, the northern boundaries of Allotments 42 and 33L,
of the aforesaid parish, crossing three intervening public roads,
to the eastern boundary of the Rangitaiki Riding; thence northerly
generally along the eastern boundary of the Rangitaiki Riding
to the point of commencement.
Ohope Riding
All that area in the South Auckland Land District, situated
in the County of Whakatane, bounded by a line commencing at a
point in Block II, Whakatane Survey District, on the shores of the
Bay of Plenty, being the south-western corner of part of Allotment
245, of the Parish of Waimana, as shown on the plan numbered
12340, deposited in the Auckland Land Registry Office (Signal
Station Reserve), and running easterly, southerly, and westerly,
generally, along the boundary of the County of Whakatane as
described in the New Zealand Gazette No. 52, of the 10th day of
August, 1950, page 1566, to the western side of the Wainui Main
Highway; thence north-westerly generally along the western and
south-western sides of the aforesaid highway, to and along the
south-eastern and north-eastern boundaries of the Borough of
Whakatane as described in the New Zealand Gazette No. 52, of the
10th day of August, 1950, page 1566, to the south-western corner
of part of Allotment 245, aforesaid, being the point of commencement.
Taneatua Riding
All that area in the South Auckland Land District, situated in
the County of Whakatane, bounded by a line commencing at a
point in Block I, Whakatane Survey District, being the north-
western corner of Lot 1, as shown on the plan numbered 18662,
deposited in the Auckland Land Registry Office, being part of
Allotment 10A of the Parish of Waimana, and running easterly and
southerly generally along the south-western, southern, and south-
eastern boundaries of the Borough of Whakatane, as described in
the New Zealand Gazette No. 52, of the 10th day of August, 1950,
page 1566, to and along the south-western boundary of Ohope
Riding, as hereinbefore described, to and along the eastern boundary
of Lot 3, as shown on the plan numbered 24302, deposited as afore-
said, being part of Allotment 245, and Allotments 381 and 384, of
the Parish of Waimana, aforesaid, along the eastern and southern
boundaries of part of Lot 4, as shown on the plan numbered 10439,
deposited as aforesaid, being part of Allotment 245, aforesaid, to and
along the eastern boundary of Allotment 361, along a right line
across a public road, to and along the eastern boundaries of part of
Allotment 352, as shown on the plan numbered 24284, and Allot-
ments 349 and 348, crossing intervening public roads, to and along
the northern and eastern boundaries of Allotment 345A, to and
along the north-eastern side of a public road to a point in line with
the northern boundary of part of Allotment 337 ; thence along a
right line across the aforesaid public road, to and along the northern
boundaries of part of Allotment 337, aforesaid, Allotment 446 and
another part of Allotment 337, aforesaid, to the eastern side of the
Whakatane-Gisborne State Highway ; thence along the said eastern
side to a point in line with the southern boundary of Allotment 379 ;
thence along a right line, across the aforesaid State Highway and the
Waimana River, to and along the southern boundary of Allotment
379, aforesaid, along another right line across a public road, to and
along the northern and western boundaries of Allotment 345, the
western boundaries of Allotment 327, Crown land, and Allotments
355 and 340, all the aforesaid Allotments being of the Parish of
Waimana. aforesaid, and along the western boundaries of Sections
6 and 9 of Opouriao Settlement, to the northern boundary of part of
Ruatoki No. 1B 2U 3 Block ; thence westerly generally along the
aforesaid northern boundary, to and along the northern boundary
of part of Ruatoki No. 1B 2A Block, along a right line across a public
road, to and along the northern boundary of part of Ruatoki No.
1B 2C 2 Block, along another right line across the Whakatane River,
to and along the northern boundaries of Ruatoki Nos. 1B 2J 2, part
1B 2H, part 1B 2B 3, part 1B 2T 3, 1B 2U 11, 1B 2U 12, 1B 2U 7,
1B 2U 6, and 2B 1 Blocks, along a right line across the Owhakatoro
River, to and along the northern boundaries of Ruatoki Nos. 2B 2 and
2B 11 Blocks, to the south-western corner of Allotment 41B 10D of
the Parish of Rangitaiki ; thence north-easterly generally along the
eastern boundary of the Rangitaiki Riding, to and along the southern
and eastern boundaries of Omataroa Riding, as hereinbefore described,
to the point of commencement.
Waimana Riding
All that area in the South Auckland Land District, situated in
the County of Whakatane, bounded by a line commencing at a
point in Block IX, Whakatane Survey District, being the south-
western corner of Allotment 357, of the Parish of Waimana, and
running easterly and southerly generally along the Nukuhou Riding,
as hereinbefore described, to the point of intersection of the northern
boundary of Waimana No. 1C 1C 1A Block with the right bank of
the Waimana River ; thence again southerly generally up the right
bank of the aforesaid river to a point in line with the northern
boundary of Waimana No. 1C 1A 1B Block ; thence south-westerly
generally along the northern and western boundaries of Waimana
No. 1C 1A 1B Block, aforesaid, along the western boundaries of
Waimana Nos. 1C 1A 2, 1C 1A 3A 1, 1C 1A 3A 2A, 1C 1A 3A 2B, 1C 1A 3A 3,
1C 1A 3B 2, and 1C 1A 3B 1 Blocks, along the northern boundary of
Waimana No. 1D 1B 2B 1 Block, the north-eastern boundary of
Section 3 of Block VII, Waimana Survey District, the northern
boundary of Te Paotamaruarangi Block, the northern side of a
public road, the northern and western boundary of Wahatane
Block, the northern and western boundaries of Otekura Block, the
north-western boundary of Section 1 of Block VII, Waimana Survey
District, aforesaid, the north-western boundary of Section 1, of
Block XI, Waimana Survey District, to the eastern boundary of
part of Urewera “ A” Block ; thence northerly generally along the
eastern boundaries of the said part of Urewera “ A ” Block, Tuturi-
tanga Block, and Te Pohue No. 2 Block, and along a right line being
the last-mentioned boundary produced across a public road to its
north-western side ; thence along the north-western side of that
road, to and along the south-eastern and eastern boundaries of
Tapatahi Block, along the eastern boundaries of Ruatoki Nos. part
1B 1A, part 1A 1, part 1B 1A, 1B 2U 1, and part 1B 2U 2 Blocks, the
eastern and northern boundary of part of Ruatoki 1B 2U 11 Block,
the northern boundary of part of Ruatoki 1B 2U 3 Block, to and along
the eastern boundary of Taneatua Riding, as hereinbefore described,
to the point of commencement.
