Appointments in the Royal New Zealand Navy

HIS Excellency the Governor-General has been pleased to approve the following appointments in the Royal New Zealand Navy:—

Acting Commander Maurice George Collins, R.N. (Special List), entered in the rank of Lieutenant-Commander (Short-service Commission) with seniority of 20th November, 1947, and appointed H.M.N.Z.S. “Philomel,” additional, to date 4th January, 1950, and as Resident Naval Officer, Dunedin, Officer Instructor to the Otago Division, R.N.Z.N.V.R., and temporarily as Officer Instructor to the Canterbury Division, R.N.Z.N.V.R., to date 12th January, 1950.

Lieutenant Edward William Blakiston, M.B.E., R.N.Z.N. (Retired), reinstated on the Active List for a period of three years from 16th January, 1950, in the rank of Lieutenant with seniority of 21st December, 1944, and appointed H.M.N.Z.S. “Philomel,” additional, and as Instructor Officer to the Auckland Division, R.N.Z.N.V.R., to date 16th January, 1950.

Lieutenant Alan Hollman, R.N., lent Royal New Zealand Navy for two years’ exchange service, and appointed H.M.N.Z.S. “Philomel,” additional, for passage, to date 13th January, 1950.

Commander (E) Alan Humphrey Bott, R.N., lent Royal New Zealand Navy and appointed H.M.N.Z.S. “Maori,” additional, to date 7th January, 1950.

Instructor Lieutenant (Acting Instructor Lieutenant-Commander) Colin James Taylor, B.Sc., promoted to the rank of Instructor Lieutenant-Commander, to date 24th November, 1949.

Surgeon Lieutenant John William Doupe, M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P., granted the Acting rank of Surgeon Lieutenant-Commander, to date 16th January, 1950, whilst holding the appointment of Squadron Medical Officer, H.M.N.Z.S. “Bellona.”

Mr. Samuel Richard Thomas, Senior Commissioned Gunner (T.A.S.) R.N., lent Royal New Zealand Navy, and appointed H.M.N.Z.S. “Maori,” additional, to date 16th December, 1949.

Mr. Morris Aaron Lawson, Senior Commissioned Writer Officer, promoted to the rank of Acting Lieutenant (S), to date 4th January, 1950, and appointed H.M.S. “President,” additional, for course at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich, to date 5th January, 1950.

Robert Edward Lawry, Petty Officer, N.Z. 7555, promoted to the rank of Acting Sub-Lieutenant, and appointed H.M.S. “Pembroke I,” additional, to date 1st January, 1950.

ROYAL NEW ZEALAND NAVAL RESERVE

Lieutenant-Commander Robert William Polyblank, R.D., R.N.R., entered, to date 12th December, 1949, in the rank of Lieutenant-Commander, with seniority of 2nd August, 1949.

Mr. Norman T. Hagan, entered in the rank of Probationary Sub-Lieutenant, and appointed H.M.N.Z.S. “Philomel” for training, to date 16th January, 1950.

ROYAL NEW ZEALAND NAVAL VOLUNTEER RESERVE

Lieutenant David Sugden Thorp, D.S.C., R.N.V.R., entered in the Otago Division, to date 10th January, 1950, in the rank of Lieutenant, with seniority of 1st March, 1942.

Lieutenant John Mitchell Fraser, resignation accepted and commission terminated, to date 20th November, 1949.

Temporary Lieutenant James Francis Tait, B.D.S. (Discharged), entered in the Wellington Division, to date 1st December, 1949, in the rank of Surgeon Lieutenant (D.), with seniority of 13th October, 1945.

Temporary Lieutenant (A.E.) Owen Stanley Braund (Discharged), entered in the Auckland Division, to date 1st December, 1949, in the rank of Lieutenant (E.), with seniority of 26th December, 1943.

Mr. Arthur Allan Shannon, entered in the Otago Division, to date 12th December, 1949, in the rank of Probationary Sub-Lieutenant (E.), with seniority of 7th December, 1949.

Surgeon Commander David Robertson Goodfellow, V.R.D., M.A., M.D., Ch.B., M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P., R.N.V.R. (Retired), entered in the Auckland Division, additional to complement, to date 1st December, 1949, in the rank of Surgeon Commander, with seniority of 30th June, 1944.

Surgeon Lieutenant-Commander Cecil Arthur Pittar, M.B., B.S. (Syd.), F.R.A.C.S. (Opt.), D.O.M.S. (Eng.), promoted to the rank of Surgeon Commander, and reappointed to the Auckland Division as Senior Medical Officer, to date 1st January, 1950.

HONORARY DENTAL SURGEON TO THE KING

Lieutenant-Colonel (temp. Colonel) B. S. Finn, C.B.E., D.S.O., E.D., The Royal N.Z. Dental Corps, relinquishes the appointment of Honorary Dental Surgeon to the King on being posted to the Retired List. Dated 11th May, 1949.

THE ROYAL N.Z. ARTILLERY

Regular Force—

Captain E. J. Manders to be Temp. Major. Dated 1st November, 1949.

Territorial Force—

Captain G. D. Beresford, 9th Coast Regiment, R.N.Z.A., to be Major. Dated 1st January, 1950.

Temp. Major D. Carey, late 7th Medium Battery, R.N.Z.A. (disbanded), is transferred to the Reserve of Officers, Regimental List, 1st Armoured Regiment, R.N.Z.A.C. (Waikato), with the rank of Major, with seniority from 8th March, 1945. Dated 1st May, 1949.

Lawrence Alexander Martin (late Lieutenant, 2 N.Z.E.F.) to be Lieutenant, with seniority from 31st August, 1947, and is posted to the 10th Coast Regiment, R.N.Z.A. Dated 1st December, 1948.

2nd Lieutenant S. C. Purdy, 13th Composite Anti-Aircraft Regiment, R.N.Z.A., to be Lieutenant. Dated 19th September, 1949.

THE ROYAL N.Z. INFANTRY CORPS

Regular Force—

N.Z. Regiment—

Major (temp. Lieutenant-Colonel) R. B. Dawson, D.S.O., is appointed C.O., 1st Battalion, The Wellington Regiment (City of Wellington’s Own), in addition to his present appointment of Director of Staff Duties, Army Headquarters. Dated 1st February, 1950.

Captain G. B. C. Pleasants to be Temp. Major. Dated 1st November, 1949.

Territorial Force—

The North Auckland Regiment—

Lieutenant F. G. Shucksmith, 1st Battalion, to be Captain, with seniority next below Captain A. C. Pryde. Dated 1st January, 1950.

Lieutenant T. F. L. Ward, 1st Battalion, to be Captain, with seniority next below Captain S. E. Weston. Dated 1st January, 1950.

The Wellington Regiment (City of Wellington’s Own)—

Lieutenant-Colonel R. L. Hutchens, D.S.O., relinquishes the appointment of C.O., 1st Battalion, The Wellington Regiment (City of Wellington’s Own), and is transferred to the Reserve of Officers, General List, The Royal N.Z. Infantry Corps, with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, with seniority from 29th February, 1944. Dated 1st February, 1950.

Temp. Major B. N. Vickerman, 1st Battalion, is transferred to the Reserve of Officers, General List, The Royal N.Z. Infantry Corps, with the rank of Major, with seniority from 20th July, 1940. Dated 1st May, 1949.

Temp. Lieutenant M. D. Hogan, 1st Battalion, is transferred to the Reserve of Officers, Regimental List, The Wellington Regiment (City of Wellington’s Own), with the rank of Lieutenant, with seniority from 27th January, 1947. Dated 1st May, 1949.

The Wellington West Coast and Taranaki Regiment—

Lieutenant J. McG. Alexander, from the Reserve of Officers, Regimental List, The Wellington West Coast and Taranaki Regiment, to be Lieutenant, with seniority from 12th June, 1948, and is posted to the 1st Battalion. Dated 10th February, 1950.

2nd Lieutenant (temp. Lieutenant) L. M. H. Cave ceases to be seconded to the Wanganui Collegiate School Cadets, Area 6, and is transferred to the Reserve of Officers, General List, The Royal N.Z. Infantry Corps, with the rank of Lieutenant, with seniority from 6th September, 1945. Dated 2nd February, 1950.

2nd Lieutenant (on prob.) H. L. Wallace ceases to be seconded to the Waitara District High School Cadets, Area 8, and resigns his commission. Dated 28th January, 1950.

The Canterbury Regiment—

2nd Lieutenant A. G. Manson to be Temp. Lieutenant and remains seconded to the Timaru Technical College Cadets. Dated 1st October, 1949.

Meredith Henry Money to be 2nd Lieutenant (on prob.) and is seconded to the Temuka District High School Cadets, Area 10. Dated 12th December, 1949.

The Otago and Southland Regiment—

2nd Lieutenant (temp. Captain) T. W. Swale, 1st Battalion, is posted to the Retired List with the rank of Captain. Dated 23rd November, 1949.

2nd Lieutenant A. G. McRae ceases to be seconded to the Southland Boys’ High School Cadets and resigns his commission. Dated 24th December, 1949.

Donald Rutherford Mitchell to be 2nd Lieutenant (on prob.) and is seconded to the John McGlashan College Cadets, Area 11. Dated 15th November, 1949.

THE ROYAL N.Z. ARMY SERVICE CORPS

Regular Force—

Captain L. W. Roberts, M.B.E., E.D., to be Temp. Major. Dated 1st November, 1949.

THE ROYAL N.Z. ARMY MEDICAL CORPS

Territorial Force—

Leslie Raymond Chapman, M.B., Ch.B., to be Lieutenant (on prob.) and is appointed R.M.O., 15th Composite Anti-Aircraft Regiment, R.N.Z.A. Dated 1st November, 1949.
