THE Public Service Commission has made the following appointments in the Public Service :—
Muriel Emma Bell
to be an analyst for the purposes of the Food and Drugs Act, 1947, on and from the 25th day of March, 1949.
Joffre French Oliver
to be Registrar of Brands for the Wanganui, Rangitikei, Waimarino, and Patea Branding Registration Districts under the Stock Act, 1908, on and from the 9th day of March, 1949.
Albert John Bennetts
to be Official Assignee for the Hamilton Supreme Court District at Hamilton for the purposes of the Bankruptcy Act, 1908, on and from the 1st day of January, 1949.
Albert Edward Hynes
to be Deputy Sheriff at Gisborne for the District of Poverty Bay for the purposes of the Judicature Act, 1908, on and from the 1st day of April, 1949.
Cecil Pretoria Simmonds
to be Deputy Sheriff at Palmerston North for the District of Manawatu for the purposes of the Judicature Act, 1908, on and from the 23rd day of February, 1949.

Varying a Notice Declaring Parts of Tribal Districts to be Tribal Committee Areas Under the Maori Social and Economic Advancement Act, 1945
PURSUANT to section 14 of the Maori Social and Economic Advancement Act, 1945, I, Peter Fraser, Minister of Maori Affairs, do hereby vary the notice dated the 16th day of December, 1947, and published in the Gazette on the 8th day of January, 1948, at page 11, declaring parts of tribal districts to be tribal committee areas for the purposes of the said Act, by excluding therefrom the descriptions of the Torere and Opape Tribal Committee Areas, and substituting therefor the description appearing in the Schedule hereto.
SCHEDULE
OPAPE TRIBAL COMMITTEE AREA
ALL that area bounded by a line commencing at a point on the sea-coast being the north-western corner of Opape Part No. 2A 1 Block, in Block I, Waiaua Survey District; thence north-easterly along the sea-coast to the north-western corner of Awaawakino B Block, in Block I, Waiaua Survey District; thence southerly and south-easterly along the western and south-western boundaries of that block to its southernmost corner; thence south-easterly along a right line to the north-eastern corner of a township reserve of 116 acres in Block XVI, Waiaua Survey District, and a right line to Trig. Station Tuanui-o-te-Kahakaha in Block X, Arowhana Survey District; thence south-westerly in a right line in the direction of Trig. Station 140 to its intersection with the Whakamaria Stream in Block IX, Arowhana Survey District; thence north-westerly along a right line to Trig. Station 774 (Te Atua Ahutapu); thence along a right line to the easternmost corner of Opape Part 3P Block; thence along the south-western boundary of Opape Part No. 2A 1 Block to the sea-coast in Block I, Waiaua Survey District, the point of commencement.

Authority from the Minister of Finance to the Commissioner of Taxes to Collect Social Security Charge on Payments in Respect of Kauri-gum
PURSUANT to section 13 of the Finance Act (No. 2), 1942, I hereby authorize the Commissioner of Taxes to collect social security charge upon all payments made by a purchaser to the seller of any kauri-gum in respect of the purchase thereof from such seller as if the moneys so paid, subject to the deduction of any amount fixed by the Commissioner under subsection (4) of section 13 of the Finance Act (No. 2), 1942, as representing the expenditure incurred by the seller in the production thereof, were salary or wages of the seller.
(2) This authority shall not apply to any payment made on a sale of kauri-gum by a licensed dealer or to any payment made on a sale of kauri-gum by any person subsequent to the sale or disposal thereof by a licensed dealer.
(3) For the purposes of this authority all moneys credited to or applied on account of a seller shall be deemed to have been paid when so credited or applied.
In this authority the following definitions and rules of construction shall apply :—
(a) “Licensed dealer” means the Minister of Lands and any other person who is for the time being engaged in the business of purchasing kauri-gum, either on his own account or as agent for any other person, and who has obtained from the Commissioner of Crown Lands either a kauri-gum buyer’s licence or a kauri-gum broker’s licence.
(b) “Purchaser” includes an agent of the purchaser and “seller” includes an agent of the seller.
(c) “Payments made” means the gross amount paid or credited by way of purchase-price before the deduction of any freight or other expenses incurred in connection with the sale.
(d) Words importing the singular number include the plural number, and words importing the plural number include the singular number.
(e) Words importing the masculine gender include females.
(f) All words referring to persons include firms, companies, and other bodies of persons corporate or unincorporate.

Warrant of Appointment of Customs Examining Place at Dunedin
Customs Department,
Wellington, 4th April, 1949.
I, WALTER NASH, Minister of Customs, in exercise of the powers vested in me for this purpose by the Customs Act, 1913, do, by this Warrant, appoint at the port of Dunedin the wharf-shed marked “A,” situated alongside the Birch Street Wharf, to be a place for the examination by the Customs of goods subject to the control of the Customs.

Revocation of Certificate Under the Licensing Act Emergency Regulations, 1940
I CERTIFY that the licensed premises known as Wairakei Hotel, situated at Wairakei, East Taupo County, in the provincial district of Auckland, are no longer being used for emergency purposes by the Government of New Zealand, and the certificate of suspension of the accommodation licence of the said hotel, given under my hand on the 1st day of December, 1942, is hereby revoked, and such revocation shall be deemed to take effect as from the 14th day of April, 1949.

IN pursuance and exercise of the power and authority conferred upon me by subsection (5) of section 8 of the Land Laws Amendment Act, 1939, I, Clarence Farrington Skinner, Minister of Lands, hereby give notice that the lands defined in the Schedule hereto are lands to which water is supplied under the said section.

WELLINGTON LAND DISTRICT
ALL that area in the Manawatu County situate in Block VIII, Te Kawau Survey District, containing by admeasurement 302 acres 1 rood and 30 perches, more or less, being Rural Sections 591, 592, 593, 594, and 595, Township of Carnarvon.
Also all that area in the Manawatu County situate in Block VIII, Te Kawau Survey District, containing by admeasurement 9 acres 3 roods and 11 perches, more or less, being part Section 384, Township of Carnarvon, and being also Lot 3 on Deposited Plan numbered 14081, and being also all the land comprised and described in certificate of title, Vol. 538, folio 235 (Wellington Registry).
Also all that area in the Manawatu County situate in Block VIII, Te Kawau Survey District, containing by admeasurement 1.17 acres and 8 perches, more or less, being Section 62, Douglas Block, and being also all the land comprised and described in certificate of title, Vol. 40, folio 116 (Wellington Registry).
