Constitution of Rural Fire District

ORDER IN COUNCIL

At the Government House at Wellington, this 15th day of December, 1948
Present:

HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL IN COUNCIL

Pursuant to the Forest and Rural Fires Act, 1947, His Excellency the Governor-General, acting by and with the advice and consent of the Executive Council, doth hereby constitute and declare the area described in the Schedule hereto to be a rural fire district, to be known as the “Rai-Pelorus Rural Fire District”; and doth hereby specify the trees and other plants on the State forests in the said area as the property for the protection of which the district is constituted; and doth hereby specify the period between the first day of November in any one year and the thirtieth day of April in the following year (both days inclusive) as a closed fire season in the said district; and doth hereby prescribe that the said district shall be administered by the Commissioner of State Forests for the purposes of the said Act; and doth hereby further declare that this Order in Council shall come into force on the day following publication thereof in the Gazette.

SCHEDULE

NELSON AND MARLBOROUGH LAND DISTRICT.—NELSON CONSERVANCY

Rai-Pelorus Rural Fire District

All that area in the Nelson and Marlborough Land Districts, Waimea, Marlborough, and Sounds Counties, containing approximately 174,500 acres, situated in Tapumutu, Wakapuaka, Maungatapu, Wangamoa, Tennyson, Heringa, Wakamarina, and Onamalutu Survey Districts, and described generally as follows : Commencing at the south-western corner of Section 85, Square 23, Block X, Wakapuaka Survey District; thence in a northerly direction generally by the western boundary of said Section 85 to its junction with the Teal River; thence by that river to the northern boundary of Section 94, Block X, Wakapuaka Survey District; thence by the northern boundary of Sections 94 and 14, Block X aforesaid, to the south-western corner of Section 13, Block X aforesaid; thence by the western boundaries of Sections 13 and 12, by the western and northern boundaries of Section 8, and again by the western boundary of Section 12, all of Block X, Wakapuaka Survey District; thence by the western boundary of Section 2, Block XI, Wakapuaka Survey District, to the Lud River; thence by that river to its point of intersection with the southern boundary of Section 5, Block VII, Wakapuaka Survey District, and by the southern boundary of Section 5 aforesaid to the main Nelson-Blenheim Road; thence by the western and north-western sides of that road to its point of intersection with the Collins River; thence easterly by the Collins River to a point opposite the south-western corner of Section 8, Block I, Tapumutu Survey District; thence northerly across the Collins River to the south-west corner of Section 8 aforesaid, and by the western boundaries of Sections 8, 6, and 7, Block I, Tapumutu Survey District, by the western boundaries of Sections 11, 4, and 3, Block VIII, Wangamoa Survey District, and by the southern boundary of Section 1, Block IV, Wangamoa Survey District, to Tasman Bay; thence in a northeasterly, south-easterly, and generally in a south-westerly direction by the coast to the north-eastern corner of Section 2 of 18, Square 91, Block IX, Wangamoa Survey District; thence by the eastern boundary of the aforesaid Section 2 of 18 to the land district boundary between Nelson and Marlborough, and by that boundary to Trig. Station Editor Hill on the western boundary of Block VI, Tennyson Survey District; thence generally in a south-easterly and southerly direction by the summit of the Opouri Range to a point on the said range, bearing approximately 355° from the northernmost corner of Lot 1 of Section 3, Block VII, Wakamarina Survey District; thence by a right line to the said northernmost corner of Lot 1 of Section 3; thence in a southerly direction by the eastern boundaries of Lot 1 of Section 3 aforesaid, 2A, 75, and 8, Block VII, Wakamarina Survey District, to the mouth of the Pelorus River; thence in a south-westerly direction by that river to the south-western corner of Section 18, Block XI, Wakamarina Survey District; thence in a westerly direction by the southern boundaries of Sections 90, 89, and 81, Wakamarina Survey District; thence in a northerly direction by the western boundaries of Section 81, Block XI aforesaid, and Section 5, Block VII, Wakamarina Survey District; thence generally in a westerly and south-westerly direction by the southern boundaries of Sections 5, 2, 57, 49, and l, Block VI, Wakamarina Survey District, Section 52, Block X, Wakamarina Survey District, Sections 47, 25, 28, 21, and 20, Block IX, Wakamarina Survey District; thence generally in a northerly direction by the western boundaries of Sections 20, 13, 27, and 26, Block IX, Wakamarina Survey District, Sections 6, 5, 4, 3, 7, and 8, Block V, Wakamarina Survey District, to the north-eastern corner of Section 34, Block V aforesaid; thence in a westerly direction by the southern boundary of Section 2, Block V aforesaid, to the Rai River; thence in a north-easterly direction generally by that river and by a public road to its intersection with the northern boundary of Section 1, Block V, Wakamarina Survey District; thence by the northern boundaries of Section 1, Block V aforesaid, and Section 8, Block I, Wakamarina Survey District, and by the western boundary of the said Section 8 to its intersection with a public road; thence by that road and the western boundaries of Sections 9 and 55, Block I aforesaid, to and across the Rai River; thence generally in a north-westerly and south-westerly direction

by that river to a point due east of the north-western corner of Section 3, Block II, Heringa Survey District; thence across the said Rai River to the north-western corner of Section 3, Block II aforesaid; thence generally in a southerly direction by the eastern side of the Nelson-Blenheim State Highway to a point opposite the south-eastern corner of Section 12, Block II, Heringa Survey District; thence in a westerly direction by the southern boundaries of Sections 12 and 6, Block II aforesaid; thence generally in a southerly direction by the eastern boundaries of Sections 6 and 4, Block II aforesaid, the northern and eastern boundaries of Section 50, Block V, Heringa Survey District, by the northern side of a public road forming the northern boundary of Sections 43 and 42, Block V, Heringa Survey District, and again by the eastern side of the Nelson-Blenheim State Highway to the Rai River; thence by that river to a point in line with the southern boundary of Section 3, Block V, Heringa Survey District; thence westerly across the Nelson-Blenheim State Highway, and by the southern boundaries of Section 3 and part Section 2, Block V, Heringa Survey District, to the north-western corner of Section 30, Block V aforesaid; thence across a public road and by the eastern boundaries of Sections 29 and 25, and the northern boundaries of Sections 6 and 19, Block V aforesaid; thence by the eastern side of the Nelson-Blenheim State Highway to a point in line with the northern boundary of Section 68, Block IX, Wakamarina Survey District; thence in a south-easterly direction generally across the said state highway and the Rai River, and by the northern and eastern and southern boundaries of Section 68 and the eastern boundaries of Sections 30 and 64, Block IX aforesaid, across a public road to the Rai River, across that river, and by the eastern boundary of Section 21 of Square 19, Block IX aforesaid, to the Nelson-Blenheim State Highway; thence generally in a north-easterly direction by the northern side of the Nelson-Blenheim State Highway to a point in line with the north-eastern boundary of Section 77, Block XI, Wakamarina Survey District; thence by the north-eastern boundary of the said Section 77, the northern and eastern boundaries of Section 29, and the south-eastern boundary of Section 87, all of Block XI, Wakamarina Survey District, to the easternmost corner of the last-mentioned section; thence by a right line to the northernmost corner of Section 2 of 5, Block XII, Wakamarina Survey District; thence by the north-eastern and the south-eastern boundaries of Section 2 of 5, Block XII aforesaid, and in a south-westerly direction by the summit of the main range to Trig. Station Mount Baldy in Block V, Onamalutu Survey District; thence by a right line in a north-westerly direction to the source of Devil's Creek, and by that creek to the Wakamarina River; thence in a northerly direction generally by the Wakamarina River to a point in line with the southern boundary of Section 4, Block XIII, Wakamarina Survey District; thence across the Wakamarina River and by the south-western boundary of the last-mentioned section to its junction with the southern boundary of Section 3, Block XIII, Wakamarina Survey District; thence in a westerly direction by the southern and portion of the western boundaries of Wakamarina Survey District and the southern boundary of Heringa Survey District to the Pelorus River; thence in a northerly direction by that river to a point opposite the south-eastern corner of Section 1, Block VI, Maungatapu Survey District; thence across the Pelorus River and by the southern and western boundaries of Section 1, Block VI aforesaid, and the western and north-western boundaries of Section 1, Block III, Maungatapu Survey District; thence in a north-westerly direction by the south-western side of a road to the western boundary of permanent State forest (Gazette, 1931, page 1); thence by the western boundary of the permanent State forest aforesaid and the southern and northern boundaries of permanent State forest (Gazette, 1941, page 3130) to the point of commencement. As the same is more particularly delineated on plan No. 104/41, deposited in the Head Office of the State Forest Service at Wellington, and thereon bordered red.
