NOTES ON THE WEATHER FOR SEPTEMBER, 1948
General.—September was a mild month, although very windy towards the end. Pasture growth was very good, and milk-production was reported to be well above normal. Lambing continued under very favourable conditions, but in the Rangitikei District, as a result of the autumn drought, many cows died in calving.
Rainfall.—Excluding slight surpluses in the Coromandel, Whangarei, and Kawhia districts, rainfall was below normal northwards from Hokitika and Kaiapoi. Under half the usual amount fell in Nelson, the Sounds, and on the east coast of the North Island.
Except for slight deficiencies in Central and North Otago there was a surplus over the southern part of the South Island, totals exceeding twice the average in the Alps and the Lakes District. Most of this rain fell in the last week, particularly on the 27th. The fall of 12·49 in. on that day was the highest daily reading at Otira since records began in 1906. On the following day rivers in Canterbury and Otago were in high flood.
Temperatures.—It was a mild month with mean temperatures mostly one to two degrees above normal, and up to three degrees in the centre of the North Island. A slight negative departure was recorded in South Otago.
Sunshine.—From Taranaki to Wellington and near Nelson and Dunedin the duration of bright sunshine differed little from the average. Other districts had a surplus, which, in the Bay of Plenty and South Canterbury, was equivalent to an extra hour per day.
Weather Sequence.—While the cyclone near North Cape moved away to the east of the North Island, a large disturbance from the Tasman Sea passed across the centre of the Dominion on the night of the 2nd. As a result, unsettled weather with widespread; though not heavy, rain prevailed for the first few days. During the 4th cold southerlies advanced northwards, and some snow fell on the high country.
A ridge of high pressure gave a temporary clearance on the 6th before a belt of rain accompanied the eastward passage of a cold front. There was a further clearance on the 8th as an anticyclone passed in the north.
A low-pressure trough with which was associated a broad band of rain then began to advance slowly north-eastwards over the South Island. Upon reaching the Wellington District on the 11th it became stationary and gradually filled up.
With a belt of high pressure lying centrally across the country, a spell of fine mild weather followed. On the 14th, however, a deep depression in passing far to the south produced some brief rain over the southern part of the South Island.
On the 17th strong north-easterly winds and intermittent rain developed in the far north, ahead of the warm front associated with a complex depression in the North Tasman Sea. Rain gradually spread southwards as far as Marlborough and Nelson. The warm front became stationary and dissipated, while the depression passed eastwards to the north of the Dominion.
A vigorous cold front advanced rapidly northwards during the 20th followed by cold southerly winds, which rose to gale force for a time on the east coast. An intense anticyclone then enveloped the country, winds rapidly decreased, and cold frosty weather prevailed.
During the 24th a band of rain accompanied another cold front in its north-eastward passage up the South Island. After remaining almost stationary in the vicinity of Cook Strait on the 25th, it proceeded, considerably weakened, over the North Island.
Unsettled westerly weather then prevailed as a series of very deep depressions passed eastwards south of New Zealand. Gales were frequent from Taranaki and Hawke’s Bay southwards, causing some damage to property and to telephone lines. Little rain penetrated to the east coast between Oamaru and East Cape, but elsewhere rain was widespread, with exceptionally heavy falls in the Southern Alps. As the last of this series of depressions moved away eastwards, strong south-westerlies prevailed on the 30th, bringing cold showery weather with some hail and thunder.
