Appointments in the Royal New Zealand Navy

HIS Excellency the Governor-General has been pleased to approve the following appointments, termination of appointments, and promotions in the Royal New Zealand Navy :—

ROYAL NAVY

Captain Douglas Hamersley Johnston, M.V.O., O.B.E., lent Royal New Zealand Navy, to date 12th February, 1948, and appointed to H.M.N.Z.S. “Bellona” in Command, to date 17th April, 1948.

Lieutenant Howard Thomas Arthur Winnall, lent Royal New Zealand Navy, to date 11th March, 1948, and appointed to H.M.N.Z.S. “Tamaki,” to date 11th May, 1948.

Surgeon Lieutenant Gilbert Maurice Baird, M.B., Ch.B., granted the acting rank of Surgeon Lieutenant-Commander, to date 26th May, 1948, whilst holding the appointment of Medical Officer, H.M.N.Z.S. “Bellona.”

ROYAL NEW ZEALAND NAVY

Commander Ralph Eric Harding, V.R.D., appointed as Royal New Zealand Naval Liaison Officer on staff of High Commissioner for New Zealand, and Naval Member of New Zealand Joint Service Liaison Staff, London. (Date to be reported.)

Lieutenant Edwin Hallett Mace, resignation accepted and appointment terminated, to date 27th February, 1948, and placed on the Retired List of Officers, to date 28th February, 1948.

Lieutenant John Ernle Washbourn, R.N. (retired), entered in the Royal New Zealand Navy in the rank of Lieutenant, with seniority of 16th August, 1941, to date 1st November, 1947.

Acting Lieutenant David Hilary Davies, confirmed in the rank of Lieutenant with original seniority of 7th May, 1946.

Lieutenant (S) Robert Gillespie Adams, resignation accepted and appointment terminated, to date 1st January, 1948, and placed on the Retired List of Officers, to date 2nd January, 1948.

Acting Instructor Lieutenant Francis Arthur Bodley, appointment terminated, to date 3rd January, 1948 (physically unfit for naval service).

Acting Instructor Lieutenant Cyril Wallace Hicks, confirmed in the rank of Instructor Lieutenant, with original seniority of 1st February, 1947.

Reverend George Trevor Robson, O.B.E., M.C., Chaplain, appointment terminated, to date 14th May, 1948, and placed on the Retired List (age), to date 15th May, 1948.

Venerable Archdeacon Harold Mayo-Harris, R.D., Chaplain, appointed as Senior Chaplain, Royal New Zealand Navy, vice Robson, to date 14th May, 1948.

Reverend Wilmot Rodd Castle, entered in the Royal New Zealand Navy as a Probationary Chaplain, with seniority of 20th October, 1941, to date 1st April, 1948.

Mr. Thomas Alexander Simpson, Warrant Mechanician, promoted to the rank of Commissioned Mechanician, with seniority of 1st March, 1948, and reappointed; promoted to the rank of Lieutenant (E), with seniority of 17th March, 1946, and reappointed, to date 1st April, 1948.

Mr. Ronald William Kirkwood, Warrant Mechanician, resignation accepted and appointment terminated, to date 21st August, 1948, and placed on the Retired List of Officers, to date 22nd August, 1948.

Mr. William Robert Paul, Acting Warrant Mechanician, confirmed in the rank of Warrant Mechanician, with original seniority of 1st March, 1947.

Francis Edward John Mason, Chief Petty Officer, N.Z. 1339, promoted to the rank of Acting Boatswain, with seniority of 16th February, 1948.

Peter Charles Christensen, Chief Ordnance Artificer, N.Z. 1982, promoted to the rank of Acting Warrant Ordnance Officer, to date 23rd March, 1948.

John Graham Williamson, Chief Petty Officer Telegraphist, N.Z. 1835, promoted to the rank of Acting Warrant Communications Officer, to date 27th April, 1948, and transferred to the rank of Acting Warrant Electrical Officer (R), to date 28th April, 1948.

ROYAL NEW ZEALAND NAVAL RESERVE

Commander Thomas Andrew Vickers, promoted to the rank of Captain on being placed on Retired List, to date 8th May, 1948.

Lieutenant-Commander William Henry Minchell, V.R.D., promoted to the rank of Commander and placed on the Retired List, to date 31st March, 1948. (Granted the honorary rank of Commander, R.N.Z.N., to date 16th January, 1948.)

Lieutenant-Commander Charles George Palmer, D.S.C. and bar, V.R.D., placed on the Retired List of Officers of the Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve in the rank of Commander, to date 16th April, 1948.

Sub-Lieutenant William Ephraim Lowe, promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and reappointed to Auckland Division, to date 19th December, 1946.

Sub-Lieutenant Brian Hamilton Smith, promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and reappointed to Canterbury Division, to date 18th August, 1947.

Surgeon Commander Eric Snow McPhail, V.R.D., M.B., Ch.B. (Edin.), F.R.C.S.E., transferred to the Royal New Zealand Navy in the rank of Acting Surgeon Captain and reappointed, to date 16th April, 1948.

Surgeon Lieutenant-Commander C. W. B. Woodham, M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P., D.R.M.E., R.N.V.R., transferred to Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve and appointed to Auckland Division, to date 19th January, 1948, with original seniority of 19th July, 1944.
