Declaring Crown Land in the Canterbury Land District to be subject to the Land for Settlements Act, 1925

WHEREAS the land described in the Schedule hereto (hereinafter referred to as the said land) is Crown land not acquired under the Land for Settlements Act, 1925, but is adjacent to certain land acquired under the said Act, and known as the Waikakahi Settlement and can conveniently be disposed of therewith:

Now, therefore, I, Lieutenant-General Sir Bernard Cyril Freyberg, the Governor-General of the Dominion of New Zealand, acting in pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by section one hundred and five of the said Act, and on the recommendation of the Land Settlement Board, and after considering the report of the Canterbury District Land Board, do hereby declare the said land to be subject to the said Act, to the intent that it shall hereupon be deemed to be portion of the said Waikakahi Settlement and may be disposed of accordingly.

SCHEDULE

CANTERBURY LAND DISTRICT

RESERVE 3475, Block VII, Waitaki Survey District: Area, 5 acres, more or less.

Land temporarily reserved in the Canterbury Land District

WHEREAS by the three-hundred-and-fifty-ninth section of the Land Act, 1924, it is enacted that the Governor-General may from time to time set apart temporarily as reserves, notwithstanding that the same may be then held under pastoral licence, any Crown lands which in his opinion are required for any of the purposes in the said section mentioned:

Now, therefore, I, Lieutenant-General Sir Bernard Cyril Freyberg, the Governor-General of the Dominion of New Zealand, in pursuance and exercise of the powers and authorities conferred upon me by the said Act, do hereby temporarily reserve the land in the Canterbury Land District, described in the Schedule hereunder written, for recreation purposes.

CANTERBURY LAND DISTRICT

RESERVE 4517 (formerly part Section 83), Block VII, Cheviot Survey District: Area, 27 acres 3 roods 15 perches, more or less. (S.O. plan 7851.)

As witness the hand of His Excellency the Governor-General, this 21st day of April, 1948.

Extending Period within which the Commission appointed to Inquire into and Report upon Matters concerning the Fire at the Premises of Messrs. J. Ballantyne and Company, Limited, City of Christchurch, on the 18th day of November, 1947, shall report

To Our Trusty and Well-beloved the Honourable Sir Harold Featherston Johnston, King's Counsel, of Wellington, a past Judge of the Supreme Court of New Zealand; Alexander Wellington Croskery, Esquire, of Wellington, Secretary; Arthur James Dickson, Esquire, B.E., A.M.I.C.E., M.N.Z.I.E., M.R.San.I., of Auckland, City Engineer; and Charles Alexander Woolley, Esquire, of Wellington, Fire-brigade Superintendent: GREETING.

WHEREAS by Our Warrant dated the tenth day of December, one thousand nine hundred and forty-seven, you, the said Sir Harold Featherston Johnston, Alexander Wellington Croskery, Arthur James Dickson, and Charles Alexander Woolley

were appointed under the authority of the Letters Patent of His late Majesty dated the eleventh day of May, one thousand nine hundred and seventeen, and under the authority of the Commissions of Inquiry Act, 1908, and with the advice and consent of the Executive Council, to be a Commission of Inquiry for the purposes in the said Warrant duly set out:

And whereas by Our said Warrant you were required to report not later than the thirtieth day of April, one thousand nine hundred and forty-eight, your findings and opinions on the matters referred to you:

And whereas it is expedient that the time for so reporting should be extended as hereinafter provided:

Now, therefore, We do hereby extend until the thirty-first day of July, one thousand nine hundred and forty-eight, the time within which you are so required to report:

And We do hereby confirm the said Commission and the Warrant hereinbefore referred to except as altered by these presents.

In witness whereof We have caused these presents to be issued and the Seal of Our Dominion of New Zealand to be affixed hereto at Wellington, this twenty-first day of April, in the year of Our Lord one thousand nine hundred and forty-eight, and in the twelfth year of Our Reign.

Witness Our Trusty and Well-beloved Sir Bernard Cyril Freyberg, upon whom has been conferred the Decoration of the Victoria Cross, Knight Grand Cross of Our Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George, Knight Commander of Our Most Honourable Order of the Bath, Knight Commander of Our Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, Companion of Our Distinguished Service Order, Doctor of Laws, Lieutenant-General in Our Army, Governor-General and Commander-in-Chief in and over Our Dominion of New Zealand and its Dependencies, acting by and with the advice and consent of the Executive Council of the said Dominion.

Appointments, Promotions, and Retirements of Officers of the New Zealand Military Forces

HIS Excellency the Governor-General has been pleased to approve of the following appointments, promotions, and retirements of officers of the New Zealand Military Forces:—

COLONELS' LIST

Brigadier C. E. Weir, C.B., C.B.E., D.S.O., is appointed District Commandant, Southern Military District. Dated 1st April, 1948.

Colonel L. W. Andrew, V.C., D.S.O., is appointed District Commandant, Central Military District. Dated 1st April, 1948.

ROYAL N.Z. ARTILLERY

Major (temp. Lieutenant-Colonel) H. E. Gilbert, D.S.O., O.B.E., is appointed General Staff Officer, 1st Grade (Operations and Intelligence), Army Headquarters, in addition to his appointment of General Staff Officer, 1st Grade (R.N.Z.A.), Army Headquarters. Dated 23rd March, 1948.

Major (temp. Lieutenant-Colonel) H. E. Gilbert, D.S.O., O.B.E., relinquishes the appointment of General Staff Officer, 1st Grade (R.N.Z.A.), Army Headquarters. Dated 31st March, 1948.

Captain (temp. Major) G. P. Cade, D.S.O., relinquishes the appointment of Officer Commanding, 9th Coast Regiment, R.N.Z.A., dated 31st March, 1948, is appointed General Staff Officer, 1st Grade (R.N.Z.A.), Army Headquarters, and retains the temporary rank of Major, dated 1st April, 1948.

Captain R. J. H. Webb is appointed Officer Commanding, 9th Coast Regiment, R.N.Z.A., and is granted the temporary rank of Major whilst so employed. Dated 1st April, 1948.

Lieutenant-Colonel G. P. Sanders, D.S.O., A.I.M.C.E., is appointed Area Commander, Area 1, Auckland. Dated 1st April, 1948.

Lieutenant-Colonel I. L. Bonifant, D.S.O., E.D., is appointed Area Commander, Area 10, Christchurch. Dated 1st April, 1948.

THE ROYAL N.Z. ARMY MEDICAL CORPS

Captain A. V. Futter, from the Reserve of Officers, Supplementary List, is granted a short-service commission for the period 1st April, 1948, to 5th March, 1951, in the rank of Captain, with seniority from 10th April, 1947, and is appointed Deputy Director of Hygiene (Navy, Army, and Air) and Chief Instructor in Hygiene at the Army School of Instruction. Dated 1st April, 1948.
