Appointments and Retirement of Officers of the New Zealand Military Forces

HIS Excellency the Governor-General has been pleased to approve of the following appointments and retirement of officers of the New Zealand Military Forces:—

REGULAR FORCE

N.Z. REGIMENT

W.O. I James William Coe to be Lieutenant and Quartermaster, with seniority from 1st August, 1947. Dated 24th September, 1947.

N.Z. TEMPORARY STAFF

Temp. Major D. M. Eckhoff is posted to the Retired List with the rank of Major. Dated 18th September, 1947.

TERRITORIAL FORCE

THE REGIMENT OF ROYAL N.Z. ARTILLERY

Robert Alexander Rudge (late 2nd Lieutenant, 2nd N.Z. Expeditionary Force) to be temp. 2nd Lieutenant, with seniority from 2nd December, 1944, and is posted to the 1st Field Regiment. Dated 12th September, 1947.

THE ROYAL N.Z. INFANTRY CORPS

The North Auckland Regiment

The notice published in the New Zealand Gazette No. 53, dated 1st August, 1946, relative to the appointment of James Francis Sharkey as 2nd Lieutenant (on prob.), is hereby cancelled.

The Waikato Regiment

Francis Argrove Mathieson to be 2nd Lieutenant (on prob.), with seniority next below 2nd Lieutenant (on prob.) D. O. Hawkins, and is seconded to the Hamilton Technical College Cadets, Area 4. Dated 23rd June, 1947.

Leslie George Thomson to be 2nd Lieutenant (on prob.), with seniority next below 2nd Lieutenant A. Ashton, and is seconded to the Te Kuiti District High School Cadets, Area 4. Dated 5th September, 1947.

OFFICER CEASING TO BE SECONDED TO THE 2ND NEW ZEALAND EXPEDITIONARY FORCE

The Rev. H. Whitfield, Chaplain, 4th Class (Methodist), The Royal N.Z. Chaplains Department, and is reposted to the Territorial Force with the rank of Chaplain, 4th Class, with seniority from 9th August, 1940. Dated 17th September, 1947.

OFFICER STRUCK OFF THE STRENGTH OF THE 2ND NEW ZEALAND EXPEDITIONARY FORCE

Captain A. Ashton, and is posted to the Reserve of Officers, Supplementary List. Dated 15th August, 1946.

The New Zealand Memorial Scroll

THE following conditions relating to the institution and issue of the New Zealand Memorial Scroll are hereby published for general information.

CONDITIONS RELATING TO THE NEW ZEALAND MEMORIAL SCROLL

  1. His Majesty the King has approved the institution of a Memorial Scroll to commemorate those who lost their lives as a result of war service during the second World War.

  2. The Scroll is surmounted by the royal arms in colour (with supporters) and is inscribed as follows:—

HELD IN HONOUR AS ONE WHO
SERVED KING AND COUNTRY IN
THE WORLD WAR OF 1939–1945
AND GAVE HIS LIFE TO SAVE
MANKIND FROM TYRANNY. MAY
HIS SACRIFICE HELP TO BRING
THE PEACE AND FREEDOM FOR
WHICH HE DIED.

  1. (a) The persons eligible for the Scroll shall be the next-of-kin of New Zealand servicemen who lost their lives while on service as New Zealand servicemen during the period commencing on the 3rd day of September, 1939, and ended on the 2nd September, 1945, or who have died or subsequently die from causes attributable to that service.

(b) The next-of-kin eligible for the Scroll shall be the surviving relative (whether by marriage, blood, or legal adoption) of the deceased serviceman who is first in the following order of priority: Widow, eldest surviving son, eldest surviving daughter, father, mother, eldest surviving brother, eldest surviving sister, eldest surviving half-brother, eldest surviving half-sister: Provided that the Minister of Defence may in his discretion direct that the Scroll be issued to a relative of the deceased serviceman who, in the opinion of the Minister, is more entitled to receive the Scroll than the next-of-kin determined in accordance with the foregoing order of priority.

  1. New Zealand servicemen shall include—

(a) All those persons, male or female, who served during the war in any branch of His Majesty’s Forces in New Zealand, or who having been ordinarily resident in New Zealand at any time during the period of sixteen years prior to the 3rd day of September, 1945, served during the war in any of the armed forces of His Majesty or any of His allies.

(b) All those persons, male or female, born in New Zealand or domiciled in New Zealand during any part of the period from the 3rd day of September, 1939, to the 2nd day of September, 1945, who served during the war in any capacity in a British ship or in any ship of the mercantile marine of any of His Majesty’s allies.

  1. If any question arises as to the issue of or eligibility for the Scroll it shall be decided by the Minister of Defence, whose decision shall be final.

to be a member of the Licensing Committee for the District of Central Otago, vice A. L. W. McEwen, Esquire, resigned.

Stipendiary Magistrate appointed

HIS Excellency the Governor-General has been pleased to appoint

James Sugden Hanna, Esquire,
of Wellington, to be a Stipendiary Magistrate to exercise criminal and civil jurisdiction within New Zealand.

Commissioner of the Supreme Court appointed

GODFREY ALEXANDER CARTER, Esquire, of Melbourne, in the State of Victoria, a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria, has this day been appointed by the Honourable Sir Humphrey Francis O’Leary, K.C.M.G., Chief Justice of New Zealand, a Commissioner of the Supreme Court of New Zealand in Victoria under the 47th section of the Judicature Act, 1908, for the purpose of administering and taking all such oaths, affidavits, and affirmations as in the said section mentioned.
