Particulars regarding the number and kinds of imported game and native game that may be taken or killed by any one person in any one day and the period and area within which such game may be taken or killed are specified in the notification fixing the open season in each district.
Shooting may begin not earlier than one hour before sunrise and must cease not later than one hour after sunset.
The open season for waterfowl this year has been restricted to the period 4th to 26th May (both days inclusive) in acclimatization districts in the North Island and 4th May to 2nd June in acclimatization districts in the South Island.
A short open season for paradise duck has been declared from 4th to 26th May in certain acclimatization districts in the North Island and 4th May to 2nd June in certain acclimatization districts in the South Island.
A short open season for pukeko from 4th to 26th May in certain acclimatization districts in the North Island and from 4th May to 2nd June in certain acclimatization districts in the South Island has been declared.
Native pigeon is absolutely protected.
Godwits and Knots are absolutely protected.
Canadian goose are not protected in the Ashburton Acclimatization District or in the South Canterbury Acclimatization District.

Animals Protection and Game Act, 1921-22-Protection of Native Birds
Department of Internal Affairs,
Wellington, 5th April, 1946.
THE public are earnestly requested to assist in preserving for posterity the native birds of New Zealand.
Under the Animals Protection and Game Act, 1921-22, it is illegal for any person to take or kill any protected birds, or have in possession the skins, feathers, or eggs of any such birds, without the consent of the Minister of Internal Affairs.
It is also illegal for any person to rob or destroy the nest of any bird to which the Act applies.
Every person who offends against such provisions is liable to a fine of Β£25 for every such offence.
NATIVE GAME
Native game can be shot only during the open season, and then only such kinds of native game as are specified in the annual shooting-season warrants.
The following is a list of native game:-
Black swan (except in Chatham Islands County).
Duck-
Grey duck.
Shoveller.
Paradise duck.
Pukeko.
ABSOLUTELY PROTECTED BIRDS
The following is a list of the absolutely protected birds:-
