The Canister Workers Employees’ Labour Legislation Suspension Order 1944
IN pursuance of the Labour Legislation Emergency Regulations 1940, the Minister of Labour doth hereby order as follows:-

This Order may be cited as the Canister Workers Employees’ Labour Legislation Suspension Order 1944.

This Order applies to Alexander Harvey and Sons (Wellington), Ltd., and to the workers who are employed by the company and whose employment is subject to the provisions of the New Zealand Metal Trades’ Employees’ award dated the 30th day of June, 1941, and recorded in 41 Book of Awards 655.

The provisions of all Acts and regulations thereunder and of the said award are hereby suspended in so far as any such provisions operate to prevent the workers referred to in clause 2 hereof from being employed on the terms and conditions herein set forth.

Females eighteen years of age and over may be employed as casual workers during the hours from 5.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday in each week.

For all time worked during the hours mentioned in the preceding clause the workers shall be paid 2s. 6d. per hour, inclusive of increases granted by the Court of Arbitration in pursuance of the Rates of Wages Emergency Regulations 1940.

This Order shall come into effect on and from the day of the date hereof.

The Shops and Offices Act, 1921-22, and its Amendments.-Fixing the Closing-hours of Chemists’ Shops within the Combined District of Dunedin
WHEREAS a requisition in writing, signed by a majority of the occupiers of all the chemists’ shops within the Combined District of Dunedin, comprising the City of Dunedin and the boroughs of St. Kilda, Port Chalmers, West Harbour, and Green Island, has been forwarded to me, desiring that all such shops within the said combined district, save and except the shop (hereinafter referred to as “the exempted shop”) established at 55 Moray Place, within the City of Dunedin, for the purpose only of the sale of medicines and surgical appliances that are urgently required, and known as the “Associated Chemists, Limited,” be closed as set out below, and that subsection (4) of section 35 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921-22, should not apply to any shop within two miles and a half of the exempted shop while medicines and surgical appliances are obtainable from the exempted shop: On Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 5.30 p.m., on Fridays at 9 p.m., and on Sundays for the whole of the day, with the following exceptions: (1) On the working-day that first precedes Christmas Day and on the working-day that first precedes New Year’s Day, the closing-hour shall be 11 p.m.; (2) on the working-day that first precedes Good Friday, the closing-hour shall be 9.30 p.m.:
And whereas the Minister of Labour is satisfied that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the said shops within the said combined district, and that all the occupiers of the said shops within the said combined district affected by section 35 (1) of the said Act have been afforded an equal right to share at a reasonable cost in the profits of the business carried on by the exempted shop:
Now, therefore, in pursuance of sections 32 and 35 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921-22, and in pursuance of section 15 of the Shops and Offices Amendment Act, 1927, I do hereby direct that on and after the 26th day of June, 1944, all the chemists’ shops within the Combined District of Dunedin, save and except the exempted shop, shall be closed accordingly.
The notice dated the 25th September, 1936, and gazetted on the 1st October, 1936, fixing the closing-hours of chemists’ shops in the Combined District of Dunedin shall be and is hereby cancelled as from the date of the coming into operation of this notice.

NOTES
(1) Pursuant to section 21 (e) of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921-22, a chemist may keep his shop open (but only for the supply of medicines and surgical appliances) between the hours of 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. on the statutory closing-day.
(2) Pursuant to section 35 (4) of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921-22, a chemist in the combined district whose shop is more than two miles and a half from the exempted shop may supply medicines and surgical appliances that are urgently required on Sundays and on working-days outside the hours specified above: Provided that the shop is opened for such purpose only and is closed immediately the sale is effected, and that the door of the shop is kept locked except for the admission and exit of the customer.
Appointing Saturday as the Statutory Closing-day in the Combined District of Taumarunui and Manunui
WHEREAS a poll to determine the statutory closing-day in the combined district of Taumarunui and Manunui, comprising the Borough of Taumarunui and the Town District of Manunui, was duly taken under the authority of section 20 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921-22, on the 27th day of May, 1944:
And whereas the Town Clerk of the Borough of Taumarunui has notified me that the majority of the votes given at such poll were in favour of the appointment of Saturday as the statutory closing-day in the said combined district:
Now, therefore, I, James O’Brien, for the Minister of Labour, in pursuance of section 20 of the said Act, do hereby appoint Saturday as the statutory closing-day in the said combined district on and from the 26th day of June, 1944.

WHEREAS a poll to determine the statutory closing-day in the Borough of Raetihi was duly taken under the authority of section 20 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921-22, on the 27th day of May, 1944:
And whereas the Town Clerk of the Borough of Raetihi has notified me that the majority of the votes given at such poll were in favour of the appointment of Saturday as the statutory closing-day in the said borough:
Now, therefore, I, James O’Brien, for the Minister of Labour, in pursuance of section 20 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921-22, do hereby appoint Saturday as the statutory closing-day in the said borough on and from the 26th day of June, 1944.

THE following resolution passed by the Wairoa County Council on the 10th day of May, 1944, is published in accordance with section 7 (2) of the Noxious Weeds Amendment Act, 1934:-
“RESOLUTION
“That, pursuant to section 7, subsection (1), of the Noxious Weeds Amendment Act, 1934, the Wairoa County Council hereby resolves to assume responsibility for the administration of the Noxious Weeds Act, 1928, within the County of Wairoa as from the 1st day of July, 1944.”

SPECIAL ORDER
“That in exercise of the powers conferred on it by the Noxious Weeds Act, 1928, the Woodville Borough Council hereby resolves and declares, by way of special order, that the plants mentioned in the Schedule hereto (being plants mentioned in the Second Schedule to the said Act, as extended from time to time by the Governor-General in Council) are noxious weeds within the Borough of Woodville.
