Immediate Operational Awards approved by His Majesty the King

Office of the Minister of Defence,
Wellington, 18th April, 1944.

HIS Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to approve of the following Immediate Operational Awards in recognition of gallant and distinguished service during operations leading up to and during operations on Green Island in the South Pacific Area:—

2ND NEW ZEALAND EXPEDITIONARY FORCE

The Distinguished Service Order

Major Arthur Beecher Bullen (No. 23815), New Zealand Infantry.

At Green Island on 20th February, 1944, Major Bullen was in command of D Company of his Battalion during an attack on a position in the vicinity of Tanaheran Village.

In spite of heavy fire from machine-guns, mortars, and grenades, he led his company to within striking distance of the position and deployed his platoons in such a way that the enemy was forced into a small pocket on the coast. As there was then little daylight left Major Bullen decided to assault the position in order to prevent the enemy escaping in the darkness. Having brought his platoons to within 30 yards of the position, at a given signal he personally led the attack which succeeded in completely destroying sixty of the enemy.

Major Bullen’s action in organizing and directing the attack regardless of his personal safety was an inspiration to his men and an outstanding example of splendid leadership.

The Distinguished Conduct Medal

No. 44892 Sergeant Gilbert Henry Reesby, New Zealand Infantry.

At Green Island on 20th February, 1944, Sergeant Reesby was in temporary command of a platoon of his Battalion which was engaged in liquidating an enemy post on the coast in the vicinity of Tanaheran Village. Under heavy fire, and with complete disregard for his personal safety, he led his platoon to within 30 yards of the enemy and killed six of them in doing so. This action enabled the remainder of the company to encircle the enemy and to approach within assaulting distance. When the signal for the assault was given Sergeant Reesby led his platoon with great dash, was the first man into the position, and killed several more of the enemy. Throughout the operation he displayed outstanding courage and set a splendid example to the whole of the company.

No. 73365 Corporal Philip Anzac Davidson, New Zealand Infantry.

At Sirot on 17th February, 1944, Corporal Davidson was a member of a Brigade Defence Platoon which was part of a force carrying out a reconnaissance of the island. While patrolling towards the north-western coast the platoon made contact with a party of sixteen of the enemy, who suddenly opened fire with grenades and a machine-gun at a range of 30 yards.

With complete disregard for his own safety, Corporal Davidson rushed the position, killed seven of the enemy, and put the gun out of action. The remainder of the force were thus enabled to go forward and destroy the remaining enemy without further loss to themselves. Corporal Davidson himself continued to assist with great gallantry in the mopping up. The conduct of Corporal Davidson throughout the operation was an inspiration to his comrades and is deserving of the highest praise.

The Military Medal

No. 453235 Private John Herbert Jefferis, New Zealand Infantry.

At Green Island on 31st January, 1944, Private Jefferis was a member of a barge reconnaissance party. On approaching within 30 yards of a beach south of Pokonian Plantation the barge came suddenly under heavy machine-gun fire, which killed the Platoon Commander and Coxswain.

Without hesitation and with complete disregard for his own safety, Private Jefferis immediately stood up and engaged the enemy with a Bren gun, which silenced the fire.

This prompt act enabled the barge to be cleared from the danger area, and prevented the enemy from inflicting further casualties.

The conduct of Private Jefferis throughout the action was highly commendable and a splendid example of devotion to duty.

No. 615519 Private William Thomas Augustus Aylward, New Zealand Infantry.

At Green Island on 31st January, 1944, Private Aylward was one of a party in a barge giving covering fire by rifle grenade to a platoon which was making a flank attack on an enemy position on the beach.

In spite of heavy machine-gun fire at close range, he continued bombing with such good effect that the enemy fire was silenced.
