Price Order No. 221 (Poultry)
PURSUANT to the powers conferred on it by the Control of Prices Emergency Regulations 1939,* the Price Tribunal, acting with the authority of the Minister of Industries and Commerce, doth hereby make the following Price Order :—
PRELIMINARY

This Order may be cited as Price Order No. 221, and shall come into force on the 17th day of April, 1944.

(1) In this Order, the term “poultry” means geese, turkeys, domestic fowls, and domestic ducks (irrespective of age or sex).
(2) For the purposes of the Schedule hereto, poultry to which this Order applies shall be classified in accordance with the following provisions :—
Geese and Turkeys—
The terms “geese” and “turkeys” respectively shall be deemed to include all poultry that are customarily referred to as geese or turkeys, irrespective of age or sex.
Domestic Fowls—
(a) Domestic fowls shall be classified as “chickens” or as “boiling-fowls”.
(b) The general distinguishing characteristics of “chickens” are the following :—
(i) They are under five months old :
(ii) Breastbones terminate in pliable gristle, and not in completely hardened bone :
(iii) In the case of cockerels, spurs are not hardened or fully developed.
(c) All fowls that do not possess the general distinguishing characteristics of “chickens” shall be classified as “boiling-fowls”.
(d) “Grade A”, in relation to domestic fowls, means chickens and boiling-fowls that are well fleshed on the breast, have unbroken straight breastbones, carry no tears in the skin on the breast, and are not discoloured as the result of bruising or decomposition.
(e) “Grade B”, in relation to domestic fowls, means chickens and boiling-fowls other than those that are included in Grade A.
Domestic Ducks—
(a) Domestic ducks shall be classified as “ducklings” or as “ducks”.
(b) The general distinguishing characteristics of “ducklings” are the following :—
(i) They are under ten weeks old :
(ii) Throats and breastbones are soft and pliable.
(c) All ducks that do not possess the distinguishing characteristics of “ducklings” shall be classified as “ducks”.
General to all Classes of Poultry—
(a) The description “unplucked and undrawn” applies to poultry carrying head, legs, normal feathering, and internal organs.
(b) The description “plucked and undrawn” applies to poultry carrying head, legs, and internal organs, but having feathers (except those on neck adjacent to head) removed.
(c) The description “plucked, drawn, and trussed” means poultry from which all feathers, head, shanks, and internal organs have been removed and which is shaped by means of skewers or string ready for cooking purposes.
APPLICATION OF THIS ORDER
- (1) This Order applies with respect to wholesale and retail sales of dead poultry.
(2) The maximum prices fixed by this Order apply with respect to sales by auction, as well as to other sales.
(3) The provisions of this Order shall apply notwithstanding that any poultry to which the Order is applicable is sold otherwise than by weight.
