HIS Excellency the Governor-General has been pleased to approve the following appointment in the New Zealand Naval Forces :—

Lieutenant Brian Ussher Alcock, Royal Navy, H.M.S. “Leander” to “Leander” in continuation of present appointment, and vice Norris, temporarily, with the acting rank of Lieutenant-Commander (E), to date 20th January, 1940, for the period of his appointment in charge.

Commander George Hamilton Dennistoun, D.S.O., R.N. (retired). Appointment to H.M.S. “Philomel” additional, as Naval Officer in Charge, Lyttelton, to be terminated on relief, to date 7th February, 1940, and be borne for leave until and demobilized on 22nd February, 1940.

Temporary Lieutenant-Commander Raymond Rowsell, Royal Naval Reserve (N.Z.), appointed to H.M.S. “Philomel” additional, as Naval Officer in Charge, Lyttelton, to date 7th February, 1940, vice Dennistoun, and as extended Defence Officer in continuation.

Lieutenant-Commander Hubert Alexander Rhind, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (N.Z.), appointed to H.M.S. “Philomel” additional, as District Intelligence Officer, Lyttelton, in continuation and as Naval Control Service Officer, Lyttelton, to date 7th February, 1940.

Lieutenant John David Keay, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (N.Z.), appointed to H.M.S. “Philomel” additional, for duty with the Naval Officer in Charge, Lyttelton, vice Poole, to date 7th February, 1940.

Probationary Sub-Lieutenant Owen Francis Alfred Poole, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (N.Z.), appointed to H.M.S. “Philomel” additional, for duty at Auckland, to date 8th February, 1940, and to H.M.S. “Philomel” additional, for H.M.S. “James Cosgrove” additional, to date 17th February, 1940.

Probationary Sub-Lieutenant Frederick Kendall Gibson, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (N.Z.), appointed to H.M.S. “Philomel” additional, for temporary duty at Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve Headquarters, Christchurch, vice Keay, to date 5th February, 1940.

Paymaster-Lieutenant Robert Lindsay Laurensen, A.R.A.N.Z., Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (N.Z.), appointed to H.M.S. “Philomel” additional, for duty with the Naval Officer in Charge, Lyttelton, and with the District Intelligence Officer and Naval Control Service Officer, Lyttelton, and as Accountant Officer, Canterbury Division of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, to date 19th February, 1940.

HIS Excellency the Governor-General has been pleased to approve of the following appointments and promotions of officers of the Royal New Zealand Air Force :—

GENERAL DUTIES BRANCH.

Flying Officer Aubrey Arthur Ninnis Breckon, R.A.F., is granted a short-service commission in the Royal New Zealand Air Force in the rank of Flying Officer (on probation). Dated 17th June, 1939.

Promotions.

The undermentioned Flying Officers are granted the temporary rank of Flight Lieutenant :—

Cameron Archer Turner.

Arthur Beale Greenaway.

Ian Gordon Morrison.

Aubrey Arthur Ninnis Breckon.

Dated 1st January, 1940.

The undermentioned Pilot Officers are granted the rank of Flying Officer :—

HIS Excellency the Governor-General has been pleased to approve of the following appointments, promotions, and transfers of officers of the New Zealand Military Forces :—

STAFF.

Lieutenant E. J. Horwood, M.Sc., N.Z. Staff Corps, relinquishes the appointments of Assistant Area Officer, No. 5 Area, and Adjutant, Central District Signal Company, N.Z. Corps of Signals, Wellington, and is appointed Instructor, Army School of Instruction, Trentham. Dated 4th January, 1940.

N.Z. TEMPORARY STAFF.

Major A. S. Muir, O.B.E., Retired List, to be Captain (acting Major), and is appointed Ship’s Quartermaster. Dated 29th December, 1939.

Captain (acting Major) S. C. Reid, M.C., relinquishes the appointment of Quartermaster, Ngaruawahia Military Camp, is appointed Commandant, Ngaruawahia Military Camp, and is granted the rank of Major while so employed. Dated 14th November, 1939.

Major G. A. Perry, Regiment of N.Z. Artillery, to be Captain, and is appointed Artillery Instructor, Army School of Instruction, Trentham. Dated 8th December, 1939.

Captain A. R. Curtis, M.C., Retired List, to be Captain, and is appointed Assistant Area Officer, No. 9 Area, Greymouth. Dated 20th December, 1939.

Captain S. Boscawen (late N.Z. Expeditionary Force), to be Lieutenant, and is appointed Assistant Quartermaster, Papakura Military Camp. Dated 7th December, 1939.

Captain W. Fergie relinquishes the appointment of Adjutant, 1st Battalion, The Canterbury Regiment, Christchurch, and is reposted to the Reserve of Officers, Class II (b), Area 10. Dated 19th January, 1940.
