As the anti-cyclone continued eastward another series of westerly depressions appeared on the 21st accompanied by showers. By the 23rd the situation had deteriorated, with heavy rain and widespread electrical storms west of the ranges. The south-westerly winds became stronger, showers were general, and heavy hail and snow fell in Otago and Southland and in scattered regions up to Hawke’s Bay.
Once more with a steep southerly gradient between the high pressure to the west and the low to the east, a very severe snow-storm raged during the 25th and 26th in the South Island, but Nelson and Westland escaped, and it continued up the North Island where snow fell in Auckland City early on the 27th. On that day the thaw set in down south, but fresh secondaries arrived, followed by south-westerly gales, which were particularly squally in Banks Peninsula. On the 28th the anti-cyclone extended on to the Dominion but the gales continued, the wind becoming more westerly in the north. However, a further fall of pressure to the east brought more southerly winds with additional snowfalls in Otago and Banks Peninsula. The cold checked the thaw in Southland and staved off serious flooding.
At the close of the month the anti-cyclone was over Southland, but south-easterly gales, accompanied by snow, raged between Marlborough and East Cape and about Taranaki. Snow occasionally fell farther north, even up to Cape Maria van Diemen.
