Meteorological Observations

There were many heavy falls over the North Island, especially in Taranaki, on the 19th. On Mt. Egmont there was a deluge of 12 inches. Again, at Napier on the 23rd, a downpour occurred in the evening, approximately 3 inches falling in an hour. A severe thunderstorm with hail and heavy rain occurred at Invercargill on the 19th.

The weather remained rather unsettled for the remainder of the month. A shallow westerly depression passed on the 26th and 27th bringing scattered rains to western districts. On the 28th a low-pressure centre developed in the northern part of this disturbance and moved southward and then eastward from near Norfolk Island. It was responsible for much dull, misty, and wet weather in northern and eastern districts of the North Island.
