NEW ZEALAND.—SOUTH ISLAND.—GODLEY HEAD.
Fog-signal: General Information.
Position: Lat., 43° 36′ S.; long., 172° 49′ E. (approx.).
Details: When taking observations on the fog-signal from 0616 to 0724 on the 12th January, it was found that the signal began to decrease in strength when it bore 170° 2·9 miles and inaudible when it bore 160° 2·9 miles. Between these positions at approximately the same distance the signal was weak and variable. On passing Godley Head inwards it was also found that the signal decreased considerably in strength when the fog-signal hut was closed with the cliff and inaudible when about one mile inside the head.
Weather: Barometer 30·35; temp. 46°; wind W. 2; blue sky; moderate northerly swell; visibility 9.

Tuhuia (Cow) Island: Light under overhaul.
Position: Lat., 36° 48′ S.; long., 175° 24′ E. (approx.).
Details: The light has been temporarily discontinued for overhaul and will be re-exhibited on or about the 16th February. No further notice will be given.

CROWN LANDS NOTICES.
Land in Nelson Land District for Selection on Renewable Lease.
District Lands and Survey Office,
Nelson, 1st February, 1938.
NOTICE is hereby given that the undermentioned land is open for selection on renewable lease under the Land Act, 1924; and applications will be received at the District Lands and Survey Office, Nelson, up to 11 o’clock a.m. on Tuesday, 8th March, 1938.
Applicants should appear personally for examination at the District Lands and Survey Office, Nelson, on Thursday, 10th March, 1938, at 10.30 o’clock a.m., but if any applicant is unable to attend he may be examined by any other Land Board or by any Commissioner of Crown Lands.
Applicants are required to produce for inspection when examined documentary evidence of their financial position, such as bank pass-books, certificates or letters of credit from managers of banks, financial institutions, or mercantile firms, or from private persons or parents undertaking to give financial assistance. Persons undertaking to assist financially should state to what extent they are prepared to do so and supply guarantees of their own financial position.
The ballot will be held immediately upon conclusion of the examination of applicants, and the successful applicant is required to pay immediately at conclusion of ballot a deposit comprising the first half-year’s rent, broken-period rent, lease fee, and amount of improvement loading (if paid in cash).
Note.—This land is offered in terms of section 153 of the Land Act, 1924, which provides that no right to any mineral under the surface shall pertain to the lessee, whose rights shall be to the surface soil only.
SCHEDULE.
NELSON LAND DISTRICT.—FIRST-CLASS LAND.
Buller County.—Kawatiri Survey District.—Karamea Mining District: Westport Harbour Endowment.
PART Section 14, Block II, and Section 2, Block VI: Area, 9 acres 1 rood 16 perches. Capital value £30; half-yearly rent, 12s.
Weighted with £294 valuation for improvements, comprising five-roomed dwelling, bathroom, and pantry. This sum is payable either in cash or over a term of fifteen years, interest 5 per cent.
This property, which is suitable for a homestead site and for gardening, is situated on the Waimangaroa Road, about half a mile from the Waimangaroa Railway-station and Post-office, and a quarter of a mile from School. Mostly flat land running to hillside at the back. Soil fair resting on gravel formation; water requires to be piped from small creek.
