THE following notice, received from the Mayor, Carterton Borough Council, is published in accordance with the provisions of the Local Bodies’ Loans Act, 1926.

PURSUANT to section 13 of the Local Bodies’ Loans Act, 1926, I hereby give notice that at a poll of the ratepayers of the Borough of Carterton, taken on the 18th day of August, 1938, on the proposal of the Carterton Borough Council to borrow the sum of £1,300 (thirteen hundred pounds) for the extension of Garrison Street—

The Shops and Offices Act, 1921–22.—Fixing the Closing-hours of (1) Men’s Hairdressers’ and (2) Tobacconists’ Shops within the Combined District of Petone and Lower Hutt.
WHEREAS a requisition in writing has been forwarded to me from the occupiers of shops in each of the trades of (1) men’s hairdresser and (2) tobacconist within the Combined District of Petone and Lower Hutt, comprising the boroughs of Petone and Lower Hutt, pursuant to section 32 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921–22:
Now, therefore, in pursuance of the said section 32, I, William Lee Martin, acting for the Minister of Labour, do hereby direct that on and after the 26th day of September, 1938, all the shops in each of the said trades within the said combined district shall be closed in the evening of working-days as follows: Subject to closing not later than the prescribed hour on the day observed as the statutory closing-day on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 6 p.m., and on Fridays and Saturdays at 9.15 p.m., with the following exceptions—(1) Should the occupier of any shop affected by this notice observe Friday or Saturday as the statutory closing-day, then, and in such case, the closing-hour on Wednesday for such shop shall be 9.15 p.m. (2) On the working-day immediately preceding any of the following days—namely, Anniversary Day, Anzac Day, King’s Birthday, or any other day generally observed as a public holiday; on Anniversary Day, King’s Birthday, and Labour Day; on the working-days (other than those observed as the statutory closing-day) in the period from 17th December to 2nd January of the following year, both days inclusive; and on the working-days (other than the day observed as the statutory closing-day) in the period from the Monday immediately preceding Easter to Easter Monday, both days inclusive, there shall be no fixed closing-hour:
And whereas the said requisition is signed by not less than two-thirds of the occupiers of tobacconists’ shops within the said combined district, notice is hereby given that pursuant to section 25 of the Shops and Offices Amendment Act, 1927, all other shops within the said combined district in which smoking requisites are sold shall be closed at the same hours as set out herein for tobacconists’ shops.
The notice gazetted on the 20th December, 1934, fixing the closing-hours of (1) hairdressers’ and (2) tobacconists’ shops in the Combined District of Petone and Lower Hutt shall be and is hereby cancelled as from the date of the coming into operation of this notice.
The notices gazetted on the 22nd August, 1935, prohibiting the sale within the boroughs of Lower Hutt and Petone of certain goods comprised in the trade of a tobacconist shall be and are hereby cancelled as from the date of the coming into operation of this notice.

Notice as to the making of By-laws under the Agricultural and Pastoral Societies Amendment Act, 1933.—(Notice No. Ag. 3602.)
NOTICE is hereby given in pursuance of the Agricultural and Pastoral Societies Amendment Act, 1933, as amended by section 4 of the Statutes Amendment Act, 1936, of the making by the Manawatu and West Coast Agricultural and Pastoral Association on the 7th day of April, 1937, and of the approval by the Governor-General on the 1st day of September, 1938, of by-laws under the above-entitled Act, controlling the admission of persons to any place used or occupied by the said Association for any meeting, show, exhibition, competition, or entertainment held by the said Association, which said by-laws came into force on the last-mentioned date. The by-laws made by the Feilding Industrial, Agricultural, and Pastoral Association on the 25th day of October, 1935, and published in the Gazette on the 21st day of November, 1935, at page 3383, are substantially the same as the by-laws made by the first-mentioned Association.

Poukawa Drainage Area.—Notice of Intention to make and levy General Rates.
Department of Lands and Survey,
Wellington, 1st September, 1938.
NOTICE is hereby given that it is intended, pursuant to the Swamp Drainage Act, 1915, and its amendments, to make and levy on the unimproved value of all land within the Poukawa Drainage Area the general rates described in the Schedule hereto, such rates being for the purpose of covering for the period from the 1st day of April, 1938, to the 31st day of March, 1939, the cost of administration of the said Act, including the maintenance of works constructed under that Act in the said area.
The amount of such rates (together with the annually recurring special rates already made and levied) will be payable in one sum on the 26th day of September, 1938.
The valuation-roll of the area is open for inspection at the office of the Collector of Rates, Lands and Survey Department, Post-office Buildings, Napier, and may be inspected at all times at which the office is open for the transaction of public business.
SCHEDULE.
Class A.—On the unimproved value of all land classified as Class A by the person appointed to classify lands under section 3 of the Swamp Drainage Amendment Act, 1928, threepence and ninety-eight one-hundredths of a penny (3·98d.) in the pound.
Class B.—On the unimproved value of all land so classified as Class B, sixty-six one-hundredths of a penny (0·66d.) in the pound.
Class C.—On the unimproved value of all land so classified as Class C, fourteen one-hundredths of a penny (0·14d.) in the pound.
