129 Officers’ Cook, 1st Class (O.S.)
Petty Officer Cook (O)—continued.
(D) Substitute “At the Naval School of Cookery, by the Accountant Officer borne for victualling duties and the officer borne as Instructor in Cookery. For re-examinations after failure at the School of Cookery ratings should be examined afloat by two Accountant Officers not below the rank of Paymaster Lieutenant Commander.”
(F) Substitute “The examination for Officers’ Cook, 1st Class (O S.), or Petty Officer Cook (O.), will take place after a four weeks’ advanced course at a Naval School of Cookery, to be taken as early as practicable after advancement to Officers’ Cook, 2nd Class, or Leading Cook (O.). Ratings should be nominated for this course accordingly, if otherwise eligible. Ratings who fail in the professional examination will be put back by the examining officers a varying period not exceeding twelve months and will not be entitled to a second course.”
130 Officers’ Cook, 2nd Class (O.S.) (B) Substitute “(i) One year’s service in a ship as Officers’ Cook, 3rd Class (O.S.), or Cook (O.); (ii) passed Educational Test, Part I; (iii) passed professionally for the rating. Officers’ Cooks, 3rd Class (O.S.), or Cooks (O.), are not to take this examination until they have undergone a twelve weeks’ course at a Naval School of Cookery and have completed two years’ man’s service one of which shall have been in a sea-going ship.”
(C) Substitute “For syllabus of examination see No. 129 (C), but at least 50 per cent. of marks in each subject and an aggregate of 140 marks must be obtained to qualify for Officers’ Cook, 2nd Class (O.S.), or Leading Cook (O.).”
(D) Substitute “Two Accountant Officers not below the rank of Paymaster Lieutenant Commander, but if examined at a Cookery School after course, the Accountant Officer borne for victualling duties and the officer borne as Instructor in Cookery.”
131 Officers’ Cook, 3rd Class (O.S.) (F) Add “After being advanced, Officers’ Cooks, 3rd Class (O.S.), or Cooks (O.), will be sent as opportunity offers to a Naval School of Cookery for a twelve weeks’ course of instruction. (See No. 130 (B) (iii).)”

Substitute “Between eighteen and twenty-three. Candidates will be entered as required by the Naval Board. They must be able to read and write and do simple arithmetic: lowest test acceptable is to read a passage of about fifty words and to write a passage of not more than six lines slowly read once and then dictated. Arithmetic: First four rules, simple; money, addition and subtraction only.”
(D) Substitute “An Executive Officer and an Accountant Officer, one holding at least the relative rank of Commander and one at least the relative rank of Lieutenant Commander or Lieutenant detailed by the Captain.”
(F) Substitute “All new entries, before commencing the technical course, will undergo a disciplinary course. They will then be sent to a training establishment of the Royal Australian Navy to undergo the new entry technical course of twenty-two weeks laid down in ‘Manual for Officers’ Stewards’ (B.R. 97), Appendix I. Assistant Stewards are on probation until they have passed the new entry technical course and examination and are confirmed. Any candidate who fails to satisfy the examining officers at the conclusion of the technical course or whose conduct at any time during the course is unsatisfactory is to be specially reported to the Naval Board with a view to his discharge from the Service as ‘Unsuitable.’ They will be available for draft to sea service when confirmed as Assistant Steward.”
