School Colours.

THE following school colours have been registered in accordance with the regulations published in the New Zealand Gazette of the 12th August, 1915, and amendments thereto :—

ERPSOM PUBLIC SCHOOL.
Colours : Dark blue and white.
Motto : Success Crowns Effort.
Crest : A shield, halved diagonally blue and white, bearing a crown superimposed over an open book, the whole superimposed over a scroll bearing the motto.

Notice to Mariners No. 36, of 1937.

PUBLICATION OF THE NEW ZEALAND NAUTICAL ALMANAC AND TIDE-TABLES FOR THE YEAR 1938.
THE New Zealand Nautical Almanac and Tide-tables for 1938, compiled at the Nautical Adviser's Office, Marine Department, will be published at Wellington on the 1st November, 1937, and afterwards may be purchased from Government Shipping Offices or the Marine Department, Wellington.
The publication will contain the following information :—
Tidal predictions, giving the daily times and heights of high and low water for the ports of Auckland, Bluff, Dunedin, Lyttelton, New Plymouth, Wellington, and Westport.
Time differences, by which the approximate time of high and low water may be obtained at 104 places within New Zealand.
Tidal-stream predictions, giving the approximate daily times of the flood and ebb streams making at French Pass and Tory Channel.
Daily times of sunset and sunrise at Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, and Wellington, and time differences by which similar approximate times may be ascertained for Invercargill, Nelson, New Plymouth, and Westport.
Magnetic variation (variation of the compass) at places throughout New Zealand for 1938, and places where abnormal variation has been experienced ; list of latest dated Admiralty charts of the coast and harbours of the Dominion, &c. ; list of New Zealand lighthouses and fog-signals ; regulations for preventing collisions at sea ; New Zealand time-service for chronometer rating ; standard times of the world ; general harbour and visual storm-warning signals ; railway map and distances ; table of coastal distances ; list of Customs ports ; wireless-telegraph stations ; meteorology of the New Zealand region ; Pacific Ocean date-line ; list of licensed adjusters of compasses and coastal pilots ; ports at which compulsory pilotage is in force ; system of buoyage ; closing of British ports ; provision depots for castaways ; and a list of signal letters of ships registered in the Dominion.
Information and plans relative to ports in New Zealand ; important notices to mariners issued by the Admiralty and Board of Trade and information for general use to navigators and others.
Astronomical ephemeris as required for use by navigators ; useful nautical tables with the necessary explanations ; principal articles of the calendar, holidays, &c. ; phases of the moon, astronomical phenomena, eclipses, mean places, and meridian passage of stars; &c.
Prospective purchasers, especially those desiring a number of copies, should make early application so as to receive a supply from the first issue, as some weeks may elapse between the first and subsequent issues.
The Nautical Almanac is published by direction of the Hon. the Minister of Marine ; price 5s.

Notice to Mariners No. 37 of 1937.

Military Exercises.
MARINERS and others are hereby warned that military training, including the use of ball ammunition, will be carried out in the area Baring Head–Turakirae during the week ends 30th–31st October and 20th–21st November.

Notice to Mariners No. 38 of 1937.

Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 22nd October, 1937.
NEW ZEALAND.—NORTHERN COAST.
Land Surveying Lights.
MARINERS and others are hereby advised that signal lights for survey purposes will shortly be posted on a point about two miles north-westward of North Cape lighthouse at an elevation of 800 ft. and on a point about seven miles eastward of Cape Maria van Diemen lighthouse at an elevation of 1,100 ft. Lights have also been posted at Te Kao (375 ft.) near Parengarenga, Houhora (Mt. Camel, 800 ft.), and at Knuckle Point (450 ft.) about four miles south-eastward of Cape Karikari (Karaka).
The lights will be visible from seaward on some bearings, and, as they will be used for signalling at times, should not be confused with coastal lights.

Notice to Mariners No. 39 of 1937.

NEW ZEALAND.—NORTH ISLAND.—KAIPARA HARBOUR.
Power Cable to be laid.
Position : Lat., 36° 09' S. ; Long., 173° 58' E. (approx.).
Details : A power cable will shortly be laid from a position about 220 yards above Raupo Wharf to Tikinui Wharf. The shore ends will be marked by notice boards.

NEW ZEALAND.—NORTH ISLAND.—WAIKOKOPU.

  1. Alterations in Leading Lights.
  2. Alterations in Anchorage Beacons.
  3. Buoy withdrawn.
    Position : Lat., 39° 04' S. ; Long., 177° 50' E. (approx.).
    (1) Leading lights :—
    Front beacon. Abridged description. Occ. ev. 10 sec. 50 ft. 12M (U). Alteration. The light has been altered to occulting white every 10 sec., eclipse 5 secs., and visibility increased to 12 miles.
    Rear beacon. Abridged description. Occ. ev. 20 sec. 100 ft. 15M (U). Alteration. The light has been altered to occulting white every 20 secs., eclipse 5 sec., and visibility increased to 15 miles.
    (2) Anchorage beacons :—
    Front beacon. Abridged description. Occ. ev. 10 sec. 200 ft. 18M (U). Alteration. The light has been altered to occulting white every 10 sec., eclipse 1 sec., and visibility increased to 18 miles.
    Rear beacon. Alterations. The temporary beacon has been replaced by a permanent structure 20 ft. high. The occasional fixed white light has been discontinued.
    (3) The red buoy about 700 ft. northward of the wharf has been withdrawn permanently.
    NOTE.—All lights are electric.
