✨ Meteorological Observations
AUG. 22.] THE NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE. 2347
The latter moved off New Zealand on the 14th, and a series of westerly depressions crossed southern New Zealand until
the 18th. Their effect was confined chiefly to western districts, Westland having most of its rain during this period, while fine
mild weather was being experienced in eastern areas.
On the 6th a tornado which passed over a small area of country two miles from Kaikohe damaged several houses in its
track. Fortunately its course was mostly over open and bush country. Many trees were uprooted and some haystacks blown
over. At North Egmont Mountain Hostel on the morning of the 16th two tornadoes, one severe and the other of a minor
nature, were experienced. The first lifted a corrugated-iron motor-garage and completely wrecked it.
From the 19th to the 23rd an intense anticyclone lay over New Zealand, but its central portion was situated in the south.
At the same time a series of slight depressions passed to the north, and the far northern and eastern areas were again subject
to scattered and, in places, heavy easterly rains. Otherwise, the weather was fine in most parts of the country.
By the morning of the 24th the high-pressure system had passed away and a depression had moved on to northern New
Zealand. The centre of this depression moved slowly across the North Island, passing in a south-east direction to the
vicinity of the Chatham Islands on the 26th where it became very intense, pressure at the Chatham Islands falling as low as
28.77 in. on the following day. As previously mentioned, cold southerly winds accompanied this depression and somewhat
squally conditions prevailed with intermittent rains.
There were considerable snowfalls on the ranges, especially in the North Island and north-east portion of the South.
Westland, however, experienced brilliantly fine weather during this period, and in the east coast districts of the South
Island only light scattered rain occurred.
