PART XI.—WIRE ROPES AND FIBRE ROPES.

Test of Black Wire Ropes.

  1. A sample of all rope made of black steel wire of special improved patent steel quality (herein referred to as “black wire rope”) shall be tested to destruction, and the respective breaking loads shall not be less than the breaking loads set out under the heading “Actual Breaking Load” in Table No. 2 of the Second Schedule hereto.

Test of Galvanized-wire Ropes.

  1. A sample of all galvanized-steel wire ropes shall be tested to destruction, and the respective breaking loads shall not be less than the breaking loads set out under the heading “Actual Breaking Load” in Table No. 3 of the Second Schedule hereto.

Wrapping Test.

  1. All wire ropes shall also be tested to withstand the following test: Six wires or 5 per cent. of the wires in the rope, whichever is greater, shall each be wrapped closely round itself at least eight times and shall then be unwrapped and then straightened; each wire must stand this test without breaking or splitting.

Test Certificate.

  1. A test certificate shall be supplied in respect of every wire rope.

Testing Officer to sign Certificate.

  1. Every test certificate shall be signed by a person witnessing the tests, who shall be the responsible testing officer of a licensed proving house, or a Board of Trade Surveyor, or a surveyor of an approved classification society, or the responsible testing officer of a wire-rope manufacturer who has on his premises a suitable testing-machine, or other duly qualified testing officer.

Contents of Test Certificate.

  1. Every test certificate shall also show—(1) The name and address of the makers; (2) identifying letter or number on the rope; (3) length of rope to which certificate refers; (4) size of rope; (5) number of strands; (6) number of wires in each strand; (7) diameter of the wires; (8) particulars of the heart or core; (9) trade description of the material of which the wires are made; (10) lay of rope; (11) breaking load of sample of rope; (12) result of wrapping test; (13) name and address of testing establishment; (14) date of test; (15) name of person to whom rope has been supplied.

Inspection of Wire Ropes.

  1. Every wire rope in general use for working cargo shall be inspected by a competent person once at least in every three months:
    Provided that after any wire has broken in such rope it shall be inspected once at least in every month.

Broken Wires.

  1. No wire rope shall be used for working cargo if in any length of eight diameters the total number of visible broken wires exceeds 10 per centum of the total number of wires or if the rope shows signs of excessive wear, corrosion, or other defect which renders it no longer reasonably fit for its purpose.

Test of Fibre Ropes.

  1. A sample of all fibre ropes of a particular size, quality, and brand shall be tested to destruction in a manner approved by the Chief Surveyor of Ships, and the respective breaking loads shall not be less than the load set out under the heading “Breaking Load” in Table No. 4 or Table No. 5 of the Second Schedule hereto, according to the grade of the rope.

Test Certificate required.

  1. A test certificate shall be supplied in respect of every sample of fibre rope which has been tested.

Contents of Test Certificate.

  1. Every test certificate shall show—(1) The name and address of the makers; (2) identification mark of the rope, or colour of distinguishing thread; (3) fibre and grade of fibre of which rope is made; (4) trade brand
