Marine Department,
Wellington, N.Z., 29th May, 1935.
NEW ZEALAND.—COOK STRAIT.—STEPHENS ISLAND.
Direction-finding Signals.
Position: Lat. 40° 40′ S., long. 174° 01′ E. (approx.).
Details: On and after 17th June, 1935, direction-finding signals will, on request, be sent from Stephens Island Lighthouse Radio-station at midnight, 4, 8, 9.15 a.m., noon, 4, 4.25, and 8 p.m., New Zealand time.
As Stephens Island Radio-station does not communicate with ships, masters requiring signals should apply to Wellington Radio-station (ZLW) stating the time for which signals are required and forward their request, on week-days (including holidays), before 4.15 p.m. for the 4.25, 8 p.m., midnight, 4, and 8 a.m. signals, and before 9 a.m. for 9.15 a.m., noon, and 4 p.m. signals. On Sundays, as no communication is held with the island after 9.10 a.m., all requests for signals between 9.15 a.m. and 8 a.m. the following morning should be made before 9 a.m.
Signals will be sent continuously for five minutes at the rate of about six words per minute and consist of the signal group ZLOD sent three times, 1 to 5 dots for the number of minute, a series of the letter D and a long dash of about seven seconds’ duration at the end of each minute, thus—
1st minute ZLOD 3 times, ·, — · · — ·, &c., — — — —
5th minute ZLOD 3 times, · · · · ·, — · · — ·, &c., — — — —
The signals are of type B, wave-length 300 kc./s. (1000 m.), and should be effective at a distance of about 50 miles.
A charge of 5s. will be made by the Post and Telegraph Department for the request messages.
NOTE.—An approximate calibration of this station within a distance of 12 miles in a sector, 130° to 300° through south, bearings were found to be reliable until about 3 miles off. Within this distance errors, which increased to about 3° at a mile off, were found.
No information is available as to the accuracy of the bearings elsewhere.
