Handicraft Teachers’ Certificate Examinations, 1933.

THE following lists contain the results of the examinations held in August and November, 1933, for the purpose of the award of Handicraft Teachers’ Certificates. In the preparation of the lists consideration has been given to candidates’ successes at previous examinations held by the Department.

The first list (I) contains the names of successful candidates for the Handicraft Teachers’ Certificate Examination. Certificates will be issued to such of those as have produced satisfactory evidence of age and good character, have passed the special medical examination required, and have fulfilled the necessary conditions as to length of service and efficiency in teaching.

The second list (II) gives the names of those who have gained passes or partial passes in two or more sections of the examination.

Whale Rock: Buoy discontinued.

Position: 350°, 1·5 cables from Whale Rock. Lat., 35° 11′ S.; long., 174° 12′ E. (approx.). Chart No. 1090.

Details: The black buoy marking the rock has broken adrift and will not be replaced.

ADMIRALTY PUBLICATIONS.

SUPPLEMENT No. 2 to the New Zealand Pilot, 10th edition, corrected up to and including Admiralty Notice No. 1241 of 1933, and New Zealand Notice No. 12 of 1933, has been published, and may be obtained at Mercantile Marine Offices at the main ports by persons who have purchased the volume in New Zealand.

Lifuka Island: Lights established.

(1) Position: On Hakau Muikuku, 2·05 miles, 346° from Pangai Observation spot. Lat., 19° 47′ S.; long., 174° 21′ W. (approx.).

Abridged description: Fl. ev. 3 sec., 22 ft., 6 m.

Character: Flashing white every three seconds. Elevation—22 ft. (6 m 7). Visibility—6 miles. Structure—Red structure, 26 ft. (7 m 9) in height.

(2) Position: At Pangai, 2·9 cables, 309° from Pangai Observation spot. Lat., 19° 48′ S.; long., 174° 21′ W. (approx.).

Abridged description: F.W.R. 2 m.

Character: Fixed, with white and red sectors. Visibility—2 miles. Structure—Black steel column, 11 ft. (3 m 3) in height. On Chart No. 473 the red sector from 115° to 122° is to be inserted.

COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA.—LIGHTHOUSE SERVICE.

NOTICE TO MARINERS, 1933, No. 9.

Australia.—South Coast.—Victoria.—Cape Nelson.—Intended alteration in Light: Temporary Light to be exhibited.

MARINERS and others are hereby notified that the occulting light with white and red sectors will be altered on or about 17th March, 1934.

Position: Lat., 38° 26′ S.; long., 141° 33′ E., on Chart No. 1062.

Alterations:—

Character: The occulting light with white and red sectors will be replaced by a group flashing light, with white and red sectors, showing four flashes every twenty seconds, thus: Flash, 0·23 sec.; eclipse, 2·43 sec.; flash, 0·23 sec.; eclipse, 2·43 sec.; flash, 0·23 sec.; eclipse, 2·43 sec.; flash, 0·23 sec.; eclipse, 11·76 sec.

Power: The power of the white light will be increased from 35,000 candles to 608,000 candles, and that of the red light from 14,000 candles to 243,200 candles.

Visibility: The range of the white light will remain unaltered at 22 miles, but that of the red light will be increased from 12 miles to 22 miles.

NOTE.—In other respects the light will remain unaltered.

Temporary Light: The existing occulting light with white and red sectors will be extinguished on 13th March, 1934, and from 13th March to 17th March, inclusive, while alterations are in progress a temporary light with white and red sectors of low power visible 17 miles and having the same character as the new light will be exhibited from the balcony of the lighthouse tower.
