quantities hereunder set out shall, so far as regards the material or
articles mentioned respectively, represent one ton and so on pro-
portionately:—
New Zealand timber .. 400 superficial feet.
Australian timber .. .. 350 superficial feet.
Firewood or fencing posts .. ½ cord or 64 cubic feet.
Sand .. 21 cubic feet.
Cement .. .. 5 barrels (or bags equal to same).
Broken stone .. 21 cubic feet.
Lime .. 38 cubic feet.
Bricks .. 320.
Coal .. 45 cubic feet.
Chaff .. 25 bags.
Oats .. (4-bushel bags) 10 bags.
Wool .. 5 bales.
Iron and steel .. 4½ cubic feet.

(3) If at any time the Engineer, or any Traffic Inspector duly
appointed by the Main Highways Board, is satisfied that the use of
traction-engines, motor-lorries, motor-cars, or other vehicles on the
said main highway or any part thereof would be attended with risk
of damage to such main highway or part thereof, or danger to the
public, he may by notice erected on such main highway or part thereof
prohibit the use of traction-engines, motor-lorries, motor-cars, or
other vehicles across or along such main highway or part thereof.

(4) No person shall operate any vehicle of a kind or class the use
of which is prohibited by such notice across or along such main high-
way or part thereof while such notice remains in force.

(5) No person shall damage, disfigure, destroy, or remove any
notice or part thereof erected in pursuance of these by-laws.

  1. Damage.

The driver or any person in charge of any vehicle shall give
immediate notice to the Engineer, Traffic Inspector, Overseer, or
surfaceman in charge of the said main highway or any part thereof
of any damage done by such vehicle to such main highway, or any
part thereof, or any notice erected in pursuance of these by-laws.

  1. Sledging.

No person shall draw or trail any sledge, timber, or other material
in or upon the said main highway or part thereof.

  1. Unloading.

No person shall deposit or cause to be deposited on any part of the
said main highway the load or any portion thereof of any vehicle.

  1. Chains.

No person shall operate, upon any portion of the said main high-
way, any vehicle fitted with a chain or chains on any wheel thereof.

  1. Information to be supplied.

The driver of any vehicle shall supply on demand by any
authorized person such information as to load or contents thereof
and the quantity, weight, size, or measurement of the same, and shall
do such acts as may be required by such authorized person for the
purpose of enabling such information to be ascertained.

  1. Penalties.

(1) Every person who does, or causes or procures to be done,
anything contrary to or otherwise than is provided by these by-laws
or any provision thereof, or who omits to do anything therein required
to be done by him, shall be guilty of an offence.

(2) Every person guilty of an offence against these by-laws shall
be liable to a fine not exceeding £5.

The foregoing by-laws were made by resolution duly passed at
a meeting of the Main Highways Board held at Wellington on the
17th day of February, 1932.

In witness whereof the common seal of the Main Highways Board
was hereunto affixed this 17th day of February, 1932, in the
presence of—
