37. Rate on Butter and Cheese.

Except otherwise specified, butter and cheese, minimum quantity 5 tons per
four-wheeled wagon, 10 tons per bogie wagon (owners to load and unload), for
distances of 175 miles and beyond will be charged as follows :—

For each additional 5 miles or fraction thereof beyond 700 miles 5d. per ton
will be added.

38. Food Products and Clothing for Charitable Purposes.

  1. Food-products and clothing donated to charitable institutions will be
    conveyed at owner's risk at half rates, on the authority of the General
    Manager.

  2. Written application for this concession must be made to the General
    Manager at least fourteen days before the goods are presented for carriage.

39. Returned Empties.

  1. Returned empties are packages which have on the outward journey been
    carried over the railways full and are being consigned from the original consignee
    and the original receiving-station to the original consignor and the original
    sending-station.

  2. Furniture-coverings such as scrim or canvas used for covering furniture,
    also scrim and sacking used by nurserymen in packing plants and seedlings,
    which have been conveyed by rail may, when being returned, be carried as
    returned empties under the provisions of this regulation.

  3. The charges for returned empties will be as follows:—

For any distance of not more than 25 miles .. 0 6 per cwt.
For any distance over 25 miles and not more than 50 miles .. 0 9 "
For each 50 miles or part of 50 miles beyond the first 50 0 4 1/2 "

Minimum charge as for 1 cwt.

  1. Returned empties must be certified by consignors to have passed over the
    railway full as provided herein.

  2. Carriage must be prepaid, unless there be an arrangement between the
    Department and the consignee to the contrary.

  3. Returned empty butter, cheese, egg, eskimo-pie, fish, fresh-meat, fruit, ice-
    cream, nut, vegetable, and casein curd packages, other than textile coverings for
    fresh meat, previously carried over the railway full will be carried from the original
    consignee and the original receiving-station to the original consignor and the
    original sending-station at half the returned-empty rate up to 100 miles, and at
    the full rate charged for returned empties for the balance of the journey. Textile
    coverings for fresh meat which has been conveyed by rail will, when being returned
    to the original consignor and sending-station from the original consignee and
    the original receiving-station, be conveyed free up to 100 miles and at the full
    rate for returned empties for the balance of the journey.

  4. Owners may be required to perform all handling of returned empties.
    Returned empties handled at ship's side and not carried under the provisions
    of Regulation 98 of Tariff, will be charged 1s. 5d. per ton for such handling.
    Minimum charge, 6d.

  5. Consignments under this heading will be carried at owner's risk.

  6. Empty tank wagons which on the outward journey have been used for
    the conveyance of benzine, kerosene, or similar mineral oils, and fuel oil, will,
    when being returned from the original consignee and the original receiving station
    to the original consignor and the original forwarding station, be carried free.

  7. Where the empty tank wagon is not returned to the original forwarding
    station, but is forwarded to another station for filling, and where the mileage,
    when the empty tank is railed, is in excess of that for which it is entitled to free
    return, the excess mileage will be charged at the rate of 2s. per mile.
