IN accordance with the provisions of the Education Act, 1914, and its amendments, it is hereby notified that Mr. William Frazer has been elected unopposed as a member of the Board, to fill the extraordinary vacancy in the North Ward of the Rural Area caused by the resignation of Mr. W. H. Smith.

CROWN LANDS NOTICES.
River-conservation Reserve in Canterbury Land District for Lease by Public Auction.
District Lands and Survey Office,
Christchurch, 20th April, 1931.
NOTICE is hereby given that a lease of the undermentioned reserves will be offered at auction, at this office at 2.45 o’clock p.m. on Monday, 25th May, 1931, under the provisions of the Public Reserves, Domains, and National Parks Act, 1928.
SCHEDULE.
CANTERBURY LAND DISTRICT.—GERALDINE COUNTY.—RIVER-CONSERVATION RESERVES.
Reserves 2746, 2749, 2750, 2837, and 2839 to 2893, Blocks II, III, IV, Kapunatiki, and IV, VIII, Geraldine Survey Districts: Area, 1,078 acres 1 rood, approximately.
Situated on the north and south banks of the Rangitata River, and consisting of river-bed land, all more or less subject to the overflow of the river when in flood. The land is light and in some places broken or very stony and inferior, but in others well grassed and capable (if worked with adjoining land) of carrying a good number of stock. Part of the land is safeguarded by protective works.
Abstract of Terms and Conditions of Lease.
- Term of lease twenty-one years, with right of renewal for one further term of twenty-one years.
- A deposit of six months’ rent at the rate offered and £1 1s. (lease fee) to be paid on the fall of the hammer.
- Immediate possession will be given.
- The Commissioner of Crown Lands may at any time resume possession of the land comprised in the lease, or any portion thereof, by giving to the lessee twelve months’ notice in writing of his intention so to do.
- No compensation payable to the lessee on account of improvements or for resumption, but upon the expiration or sooner determination of the lease, the lessee will be allowed a reasonable time in which to remove any improvements to which he may be entitled.
- The lessee shall have no right to sublet, transfer, or otherwise dispose of the whole or any portion of the land comprised in the lease, except with the written consent of the Commissioner of Crown Lands first had and obtained.
- The lessee shall once a year during the said term and at the proper season of the year, properly cut and trim all live fences now on the demised land or which may be planted thereon during the said term.
- The lessee shall keep rabbits in check to the satisfaction of the Commissioner of Crown Lands.
- The lessee shall prevent the growth and spread of gorse, broom, and sweetbrier on the land comprised in the lease; and he shall with all reasonable despatch remove, or cause to be removed, all gorse, sweetbrier, broom, Californian thistle, or other noxious weeds or plants, as may be directed by the Commissioner of Crown Lands.
- The lessee shall not carry on or permit to be carried on any noxious, noisome, or offensive trade or business upon the land.
- The rent shall be payable half-yearly in advance, free from all deductions whatsoever.
- The lease shall be liable to forfeiture in case the lessee shall fail to fulfil any of the conditions of the said lease within sixty days after the date on which the same ought to be fulfilled.

Land in Taranaki Land District for Selection on Renewable Lease.
District Lands and Survey Office,
New Plymouth, 20th April, 1931.
NOTICE is hereby given that the undermentioned section is open for selection on renewable lease under the Land Act, 1924; and applications will be received at the District Lands and Survey Office, New Plymouth, up to 4 o’clock p.m. on Monday, 25th May, 1931.
Applicants must appear personally before the Land Board for examination at the District Lands and Survey Office, New Plymouth, on Wednesday, 27th May, 1931, but if any applicant so desires he may be examined by the Land Board of any other district.
The ballot will be held immediately upon conclusion of examination of applicants.
SCHEDULE.
TARANAKI LAND DISTRICT.—SECOND-CLASS LAND.
Waitomo County.—Mapara Survey District.
(Exempt from payment of rent for five years.)
Sections 15 and 16, Block XII: Area, 213 acres. Capital value, £220. Half-yearly rent, £4 8s.
Exempt from payment of rent for five years, provided improvements to the value of £22 are effected annually.
Weighted with £340, for improvements comprising dwelling, cow-shed and yards, approximately 60 chains road-fencing, 150 chains boundary and subdivisional fencing, and 100 acres pasture. This amount to be secured on first mortgage to the State Advances Superintendent for thirty years at 6 per cent., payable by half-yearly instalments of £12 5s. 8d.
Grazing property, situated thirteen miles from Waimiha Railway-station and two miles from Mapiu School. About 100 acres in fair pasture; balance bush land felled and grassed but now reverted to second growth. Ragwort is spreading. Land is of sandstone formation, about 50 acres being very steep. Watered by streams.
