The total live births registered for the urban areas amounted to 1,105 as against 1,126 in December, a decrease of 21. The deaths in January were 494, a decrease of 96 as compared with the previous month. Of the total deaths males contributed 258, females 236. Forty-six of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 9·31 per cent. of the whole number. Thirty-eight of these were under one year of age.

The equivalent annual rates per 1,000 of mean population for January, 1931, and January, 1930, were as follows. The infant-mortality and still-birth rates per 100 births for the same period are also given.
