Applicants to furnish statutory declaration with applications, and, on being declared successful, deposit £1 1s. (lease fee) and a half-year's rent. Rent for the broken period between date of lease and 1st January or 1st July following is also payable.

Applications made on the same day are deemed to be simultaneous.

Order of selection is decided by ballot.

Successful applicant to execute lease within thirty days after being notified that it is ready for signature.

Residence is to commence within four years in bush land or swamp land, and within one year in open or partly open land, and to be continuous for ten years. Under certain conditions personal residence may be dispensed with.

Improvements.—Lessee is required to improve the land within one year to the value of 10 per cent. of the price; within two years to the value of another 10 per cent. of the price; and thereafter, but within six years, to the value of another 10 per cent. of the price. In addition to the foregoing, and within six years, improvements are also to be effected to the value of £1 for every acre of first-class land, 10s. for every acre of second-class land, and 2s. 6d. for every acre of third-class land.

Lessee to pay all rates, taxes, and assessments.

Transfer not allowed until completion of two years' continuous residence, except under extraordinary circumstances, and then only with permission.

Roads may be taken through the lands at any time within seven years; twice the original value to be allowed for area taken for such roads.

Lease is liable to forfeiture if conditions are violated.

NOTICE is hereby given that the undermentioned lands will be offered for sale by public auction for cash or on deferred payments at the Courthouse, Ashburton, at 11 o'clock a.m., on Thursday, 26th September, 1929, under the provisions of the Land Act, 1924.
SCHEDULE.
CANTERBURY LAND DISTRICT.—FIRST-CLASS LAND.—BOROUGH OF ASHBURTON.
For sale for Cash or on Deferred Payments.
SECTION 989: Area, 1 rood 2·4 perches. Upset price, £320.
Section 990: Area, 1 rood. Upset price, £300.
Section 992: Area, 1 rood. Upset price, £300.
Section 993: Area, 1 rood. Upset price, £300.
All of the sections are in a favoured residential locality, with frontage to Peters Street, Section 989 being on the corner of Peters Street and West Town Belt. The sections are level, in grass, and part of the area formerly held by the Agriculture Department. Excellent building-sites.
Part Reserve 1643: Area, 30·3 perches. Upset price, £2,000. Situated on the corner of East Street and Wills Street, Borough of Ashburton, with frontage of 189·4 links to East Street. Suitable for business sites either as a whole or for cutting up.
CONDITIONS OF SALE.
Cash: One-fifth of the purchase-money on the fall of the hammer, and the balance, together with £1 Crown-grant fee, within thirty days thereafter, otherwise the part of the purchase-money paid by way of deposit shall be forfeited and the sale of the land declared null and void.
Deferred Payments: A deposit of 10 per cent. of the purchase-money, together with £1 1s. license fee, on the fall of the hammer; the balance by equal half-yearly instalments of principal and interest extending over a period of 34½ years, with interest at the rate of 5½ per cent. per annum, but with the right to pay off at any time the whole or any part of the outstanding amount.
If the purchaser fails to make any of the prescribed payments by due date, the amount already paid shall be forfeited and the contract for the sale of the land be null and void.
Titles will be subject to Part XIII of Land Act, 1924, and purchaser must subscribe to the declaration required thereunder.

STATE FOREST SERVICE NOTICE.
Milling-timber for Sale by Public Tender.
State Forest Service,
Hokitika, 12th August, 1929.
NOTICE is hereby given that written tenders for the purchase of the undermentioned milling-timber will close at the office of the State Forest Service, Hokitika, at 4 o'clock p.m. on Wednesday, the 4th day of September, 1929.
SCHEDULE.
WESTLAND CONSERVATION-REGION.—WESTLAND LAND DISTRICT.
ALL the milling-timber on that piece of land, containing 197 acres, situated in Block IV, Kanieri Survey District, portion of Provisional State Forest Reserve No. 1616, about ten miles from Kumara Railway-station.
The total estimated quantity of timber in cubic feet is 388,540 or in board feet 2,431,400 made up as follows:—

Upset price: £1,907.
Ground rent: £9 17s. per annum.
Time for removal: Four years.
Terms of Payment.
A marked cheque for one-twelfth of the purchase-money, together with half-year's ground rent and £1 1s. (license fee) must accompany tender, and the balance be paid by eleven equal quarterly instalments; the first payment to be made three months after the date of sale.
In addition, the successful tenderer shall continue the payment of such ground rent half-yearly in advance during the currency of the license.
Terms and Conditions.

All instalment-payments shall be secured by an “on demand” promissory note made and endorsed to the satisfaction of the Commissioner of State Forests, and interest at the rate of 1 per cent. per annum in excess of current bank overdraft rates will be charged on all notes overdue from the date of maturity to the date of payment.

The right to cut and remove the timber will be sold in accordance with the provisions of the Forests Act, 1921–22, the regulations in force thereunder, and these conditions.

The aforementioned quality, quantity, and kind as to the said timber shall be taken as sufficiently accurate for the purposes of this sale, and no contract for the purchase shall be voidable, nor shall the successful purchaser be entitled to any abatement in price by reason of the said timber being of less quantity, quality, or kind as stated herein or in any advertisement having reference to the said timber.

A return, verified by affidavit, giving the number of logs cut and their contents must be made quarterly by the licensee on the last days of March, June, September, and December, respectively, in each year. A return, similarly verified, must be made on the same dates showing the output of sawn timber. These returns may be ascertained and verified by inspection of the books of the mill, or by such other means as the Conservator may require, and for this purpose the accounts and books shall be open to the inspection of the Conservator, a Forest Ranger, or other duly authorized officer.

The attention of all tenderers is drawn to the fact that the local controlling body may require the successful tenderer to pay any claims or charges which may be made by that body for the maintenance of the road over which the timber may be transported, and before a sawmill license is issued a letter indicating that satisfactory arrangements have been made in this connection must be produced to the undersigned,
