Animals Protection and Game Act, 1921-22.—Protection of Native Birds.

Department of Internal Affairs,
Wellington, 12th March, 1929.

THE public are earnestly requested to assist in preserving for posterity the native birds of New Zealand.

Under the Animals Protection and Game Act, 1921-22, it is illegal for any person to take or kill any protected birds, or have in possession the skins of any such birds, without the consent of the Minister of Internal Affairs.

It is also illegal for any person to rob or destroy the nest of any bird to which the Act applies.

Every person who offends against such provisions is liable to a fine of £25 for every such offence.

NATIVE GAME.

Native game can only be shot during the open season, and then only such kinds of native game as are specified in the annual shooting-season warrants.

The following is a list of native game :—

Black swan. Eastern golden plover.
Duck— Godwit or curlew.
Black teal. Knot.
Grey duck. Pukeko.
Shoveller. Turnstone.
Paradise duck.

ABSOLUTELY PROTECTED BIRDS.

The following is a list of absolutely protected birds :—

Albatross— Fern-bird (matata)—
Black-browed mollymawk. Chatham Island fern-bird.
Bounty Island mollymawk. Mainland species.
Campbell Island molly- Snares Island fern-bird.

Royal albatross. Gannet—
Snares Island mollymawk. Gannet (takapu).
Sooty albatross. Masked gannet.
Wandering albatross (toroa). Grebe—
Yellow-nosed mollymawk. Crested grebe (weweia).
Australian tree-swallow. Little grebe, or dabchick (totokipio).
Avocet. Gull—
Bell-bird, or mocky (kori- Black-billed gull.
mako). Red-billed gull (tarapunga)
Auckland Island bell-bird. Sea-hawk (hakoakoa).

SANCTUARIES.

It is illegal, without the authority of the Minister of Internal Affairs, to take any dog or firearm on to a sanctuary, or to discharge any firearm or explosive thereon, or to do anything likely to cause any bird or animal to leave a sanctuary.

Every person who unlawfully takes or kills any bird or animal on a sanctuary is liable to a fine of £10 for such offence, and to a further fine of £1 for each animal or bird so taken or killed.
