And whereas the Minister of Labour is satisfied that the signatures to such requisition represent a majority of the occupiers of all the said shops within the said combined district:

Now, therefore, in pursuance of sections 32 and 35 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921–22, and in pursuance of section 15 of the Shops and Offices Amendment Act, 1927, I, for and on behalf of the Minister of Labour, do hereby direct that on and after the 28th day of May, 1928, all the chemists’ shops within the Combined District of Nelson and Tahunanui shall be closed accordingly.

NOTES: (1) Pursuant to section 21 (e) of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921–22, a chemist may keep his shop open (but only for the supply of medicines and surgical appliances) between the hours of 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. on the statutory closing-day.

(2) Pursuant to section 35 (4) of the same Act, a chemist may supply medicines and surgical appliances that are urgently required on Sundays and on working-days outside the hours specified above, provided that the shop is opened for such purpose only and is closed immediately the sale is effected, and that the door of the shop is kept locked, except for the admission and exit of the customer.


Notice under the Shops and Offices Act, 1921–22, and its Amendment, fixing the Closing-hours of Tobacconists’ Shops within the Combined District of Christchurch.

WHEREAS a requisition in writing has been forwarded to the Minister of Labour from the occupiers of tobacconists’ shops within the Combined District of Christchurch, comprising the City of Christchurch and the Borough of Riccarton, pursuant to section 32 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921–22:

Now, therefore, in pursuance of the said section 32, I, for and on behalf of the Minister of Labour, do hereby direct that on and after the 21st day of May, 1928, all tobacconists’ shops within the said combined district shall be closed in the evening of working-days as follows: Subject to closing at not later than 1 p.m. on the day of the statutory half-holiday, on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 6 p.m., and on Fridays at 10 p.m., with the following exceptions:—

(1) During Carnival Week, on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at 8 p.m., on Thursday at 10 p.m., and on Saturday at 9 p.m.

(2) During Grand National Week, on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 8 p.m., on Friday at 10 p.m., and on Saturday at 6 p.m.

(3) On Christmas Eve and on New Year’s Eve, at 12 midnight.

(4) In the event of Christmas Day falling on a Sunday or a Monday the following hours of closing shall be observed during the week preceding Christmas Day: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, at 6 p.m., Friday at 12 midnight; Saturday at 11 p.m.

(5) Where a special holiday occurs on a Friday and the shops are closed for the whole of the day, the hour of closing on the preceding Thursday shall be 10 p.m.

The notice dated the 31st day of October, 1916, and published in the New Zealand Gazette of the 2nd November, 1916, fixing the closing-hours of hairdressers’, tobacconists’, and hairdressers and tobacconists’ shops within the City of Christchurch, shall be and is hereby cancelled in so far as it relates to the shops affected by this notice as from the date of the coming into operation of this notice:

And whereas the said requisition is signed by not less than two-thirds of the occupiers of tobacconists’ shops within the said combined district, notice is hereby given that, pursuant to section 25 of the Shops and Offices Amendment Act, 1927, all other shops within the said combined district in which smoking requisites are sold shall be closed at the same hours as are set out herein for tobacconists’ shops: Provided that no such other shop which is closed for the statutory half-holiday on any day other than Saturday shall be required by the said section 25 to be closed earlier than 9 p.m. on Saturday.

Award of Colonial Auxiliary Forces Long-service Medal.

Notice to Mariners No. 33 of 1928.

NEW ZEALAND.—NORTH ISLAND.—BAY OF PLENTY.
Derelict Pontoon sighted.

Position: Lat. 36° 50′ S., long. 176° 09′ E. (approx.).
Details: The master of the coastal steamer “Putiki” reports having sighted at 1 p.m. on the 9th May, a large wooden pontoon, dangerous to shipping, at a position about nine miles north of Alderman Islands.
Remarks: It is expected the pontoon will drift eastwards from the position stated.

Notice to Mariners No. 34 of 1928.

Southern Basin-wall: In course of Formation.

Previous Notices: Wellington Notice No. 35 of 1927 and No. 14 of 1928.

Position: Lat. 37° 08′ S., long. 175° 32′ E. (approx.).
Details: Continuing the harbour-improvement scheme, a three-quarter and a half-tide basin-wall composed of stones and boulders, running westerly from the southern end of the existing full-tide wall towards the black and white surmount beacon and thence eastward for 1,500 ft., is now under construction.

As this basin-wall will be covered at high water, the passage of vessels south of Burke Street Wharf, and eastward of a line drawn between the black surmount entrance beacon and the white surmount sewer beacon, is prohibited.

Notice under the Family Protection Act, 1908.

APPLICATION No. 4.

I HEREBY give notice that BESSIE CASLEY, Wife of JAMES HENRY CASLEY, of Matamata, Mail Carrier, has made application under the provisions of the Family Protection Act, 1908, to have the land described in her said application, situate at Matamata, in the Provincial District of Auckland, containing 1 rood and 5 perches, more or less, being Lot 7 on deposited plan 6974, and being part of a block situated in the Tapapa Survey District called Turanga-o-Moana, registered as a “family home,” and that the same will be registered accordingly unless caveat forbidding the same be lodged with me, at the District Land Registry Office Auckland, by some person claiming to be a creditor of the applicant within the time limited for that purpose by the said Act.

THAT, pursuant to the provisions of sections 4 and 5 (c) of the Noxious Weeds Act, 1908, the Rangitikei County Council hereby by special order declares the following plants enumerated in the Third Schedule to the said Act—viz., Hemlock (Conium Maculatum) and Tutsan (Hypericum Androsaemum), to be noxious weeds within the County of Rangitikei, and that this special order shall take effect on the 1st day of June, 1928.
