SUMMARY FOR THE MONTH OF MAY, 1927.

The first part of the month, until the 14th, was mostly fair and dry, but in the northernmost districts, between the 7th
and 9th, strong winds and rain resulted from a disturbance passing northwards of New Zealand. Conditions were also generally
fair from the 19th to the 22nd, but with this exception the last half of May proved unsettled in many parts, and during the
final week, owing to an intense westerly disturbance dominating, somewhat boisterous weather prevailed, with heavy rain
about the 26th and 27th.

The total rainfall was below the average in the Hawke’s Bay Province in the North Island, and in Canterbury, Otago,
and between Farewell Spit and Westport, in the South Island; but was considerably above in most other parts of the
Dominion. Christchurch experienced the driest May since observations began in 1902.

Several severe frosts occurred, and the month was, on the whole, fairly calm, with good autumn growth except in the
dry areas.
