THE following is a complete list of public schools and their staffs as at 31st December, 1926:—
The schools are placed in alphabetical order, the grade for 1926 being shown in column (2).
The average attendance of half-time schools is shown for each school as well as for the group—viz., Ahuroa (13) and Woodcocks (15); similarly, the attendance of main and side schools, and of the primary and secondary departments of district high schools, is shown separately for each school or department.
In column (5), “Position,” “H” means head of school; “S,” sole teacher; “A,” assistant; “I,” infant-mistress; “Sub. A” substituted assistant; “Pr,” probationer; “Pr.A,” probationary assistant; and “D,” assistant in secondary department of a district high school. In the case of normal schools, “N” means assistant or head of model school; “K M” means kindergarten mistress; “N (D),” assistant in secondary department. Teachers on leave of absence are included. Relieving teachers filling vacant positions are indicated by “R,” and those taking the place of teachers absent on leave but whose names are on the list are indicated by (R).
A residence is provided for the sole or head teacher, or house allowance is paid according to the following scale: Grade I, £30 per annum; Grades II and III, £40 per annum; Grade IV, £50 per annum; Grades V, VI, and VII, £60 per annum, with a minimum of £50 per annum in the case of married teachers. House allowance is not included in the salary shown in column (8).
Headmasters of district high schools (other than normal district high schools) receive in addition to the salary shown in column (8) an additional annual amount varying from £30 to £80, according to the average attendance in the secondary department. Neither these amounts nor the salaries of assistants in secondary departments are shown in this list; they will be found in parliamentary paper E.-6.
Head teachers of junior high schools receive an extra £80 per annum, which is included in the salary shown.
Organizing teachers, and teachers in the Department’s correspondence school, are shown on the last page.
