Notice to Mariners No. 75 of 1926.

Number of Wellington Notice to Mariners incorrectly given.
INFORMATION is hereby given that the notice to mariners relating to “River Thames, or Waiho (Waihou) River, Kirikiri bridge under construction,” issued by the Marine Department, Wellington, New Zealand, on the 22nd October, 1926, and published in New Zealand Gazette No. 73 of 28th October, 1926, was incorrectly given as No. 62. The correct number of this notice is No. 63 of 1926, and this latter number will be used in any further reference to that notice.
All existing copies of that notice should be altered to read No. 63 of 1926, accordingly.

THE following notice to mariners, which has been received from the Hydrographer to the Admiralty, London, and the Department of Trade and Customs, Melbourne, is published for general information.

SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN—ELLICE GROUP, FUNAFUTI ISLAND.
Fongafale Anchorage—Additional Information.
Position.—Observation spot + (Fongafale). Lat. 8° 31′ S., long. 179° 13′ E. (approx.).
(1.) Beacons :—
Positions—
(a.) At a distance of about 6·08 cables 277° from observation spot +.
(b.) At a distance of about 5·6 cables 254° from observation spot +.
(c.) At a distance of about 7·1 cables 353° from observation spot +.
Details.—Beacons are to be inserted on the plan and chart in the above positions with the note “P.A.” The following general caution is to be placed under the titles of the plan and chart and “Unreliable” shown against certain beacons expunged :—
Caution.—The beacons are not to be relied on (1926).
(2.) Church :—
Position.—At a distance of 0·1 of a cable 180° from observation spot +.
Details.—The symbol for a church is to be inserted on the plan of Fongafale anchorage in the above position.
(3.) Buoy established :—
Position.—At a distance of about 8·7 cables 259¼° from observation spot +.
Description.—A black buoy.
Remarks.—It is to be marked “P.A.” on the plan and chart.
(4.) Shoal marked by buoy :—
Position.—At a distance of about 6·0 cables 235° from spot +.
Depth.—1½ fathoms (2m7).
Remarks.—The shoal is marked by a black buoy; the notation “P.A.” is to be inserted against it on the plan and chart. (Notice No. 1654 of 1926, dated 5th October.)
SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN—FRIENDLY ISLANDS, TONGATĀBU.
Maria Bay—Non-existence of Leading-beacons.
Former Notice.—No. 878 of 1926.
(a.) Rear beacon :—
Position.—On Tufaka islet. Lat. 21° 04′ S., long. 175° 15′ W. (approx.).
(b.) Front beacon :—
Position.—About 9¼ cables north-westward of (a).
Details.—Further information has been received that these two beacons are non-existent; they are to be expunged from the chart, together with the leading-line. (Notice No. 1771 of 1926, dated 23rd October.)
SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN—GILBERT ISLANDS.
Nukunau (Byron Island)—Information re Position.
Position on chart.—Centre of island, lat. 1° 23′ S. long. 176° 26′ E. (approx.).
Details.—The position of Nukunau is reported to be incorrectly charted as indicated in the following note which is to be inserted against this island on the chart: Repd. to lie 3 miles to N.Ed. of charted position (1926). (Notice No. 1801 of 1926, dated 27th October.)
[The astronomical positions are approximate unless seconds are given. The bearings are true and in degrees from 000° (North) to 359° measured clockwise, and those relating to lights are from seaward. The visibility of lights is that in clear weather. Fog-signals are sounded only in thick or foggy weather. The elevation given is the height of focal plane above mean H.W. springs.]
TASMANIA—SOUTH COAST.
Maatsuyker Island Light—Power to be increased.
Mariners and others are hereby notified that the power of the Group - flashing White Light on Maatsuyker Island will be increased on or about 1st March, 1927.
Position.—On south end of South-west islet. Lat. 43° 39′ S. Long. 146° 18′ E., on Chart No. 1079.
Power.—The power will be increased to 239,000 candles.
Note.—No further notice will be given. In other respect the light will remain unaltered.

Notice to Mariners No. 77 of 1926.
NEW ZEALAND.—NORTH ISLAND.—COOK STRAIT.—PORT NICHOLSON.

Submarine Telephone Cable laid and Notice Boards installed.—Former Cable discarded.
NOTICE is hereby given that a submarine telephone cable exists in a direction 130° from a position situated 2,900 yards south-westward of Korokoro Stream, on the north-western shore of Port Nicholson, to a position on the western shore of Somes Island at 400 yards (approx.) from its northern extreme. The position of each end of the cable is marked on the shore by a post carrying a white equilateral triangular board, having sides 10 ft., bearing in black heavy type the word “Cable.”
The foregoing is the only cable now in use between Somes Island and the shore; and the former cable, the existence which was not shown on Admiralty Plan No. 1423, has been abandoned.

Notice to Mariners No. 78 of 1926.

Dredger operating off Western Tide-deflector.
THE Auckland Harbour Board notify that dredger “Hapai” is moored cardinally in a position 110° 550 ft. from the northern end of Western Tide-deflector, from which position the dredger will operate in a westerly and a south-westerly direction.

Notice to Mariners No. 79 of 1926.
NEW ZEALAND.—NORTH ISLAND.—BAY OF PLENTY.—TAURANGA HARBOUR.

Buoys installed.
THE Tauranga Harbour Board notify that the sailing-course from the junction of Kati-Kati Channel with Stella Channel at Sulphur Point Spit is now further marked by three additional black buoys placed in the following positions :—

050° distant 730 ft. from the northern end of the new railway wharf; in 12 ft. M.L.W.S.
-
141° distant 970 ft. from the eastern end of the White Island Company’s jetty; in 12 ft. M.L.W.S.
-
178° distant 825 ft. from the lighted beacon at the entrance to Stella passage, and opposite Sulphur Point Spit.
