PUBLICATION OF THE NEW ZEALAND NAUTICAL ALMANAC AND TIDE TABLES FOR THE YEAR 1927.

THE Nautical Almanac and Tide Tables for the year 1927 will be published on 1st December, 1926, immediately after which the book will be available by purchase from Government Shipping Offices and from the Marine Department at Wellington.

The contents of this publication embrace the necessary astronomical ephemeris used in navigation and nautical astronomy, comprising—Right ascension of the mean sun; sun’s declination and equation of time for every two hours of Greenwich mean time; sun’s semi-diameter at Greenwich mean noon; moon’s age and upper meridian passage in New Zealand mean time for every day throughout the year, and the moon’s phases in New Zealand civil mean time. Positions of the principal stars used in navigation for the 1st of January, also the times of their meridian passages for the middle of each month, the more important astronomical phenomena, &c., for 1926, and some useful nautical tables, and a lengthy explanation of the various elements are provided. The times of rising, setting, and meridian passage of planets and bright stars seen at Wellington at each mid-monthly period, in New Zealand civil mean time, are included. The principal ports of the Dominion are described from latest information, which has been revised by the several harbour authorities; and some plans of harbours and berthage accommodation are given.

Several important changes which have taken place since publication of Supplement No. 6 of the “New Zealand Pilot,” ninth edition, 1919, are included for the use of mariners.

Tide tables giving daily times of high and low water and their heights are provided for the ports of Auckland, Bluff, Dunedin, Lyttelton, Wellington, and Westport. Also time differences, by the application of which the approximate times of high and low water at various places within the Dominion may be obtained. Tidal-stream predictions, showing the approximate times when the streams are slack at Tory Channel and at French Pass are given for each tide throughout the year.

The book contains courses and distances between the main ports within New Zealand; magnetic variation throughout the Dominion for the year 1928; a catalogue of the several Admiralty charts of this Dominion’s coasts, &c., showing the last year of correction; Dominion time service for chronometer-rating purposes; Dominion standard time; general harbour and storm signals; general information of use to navigators and others; a list of Customs controlling ports; railway distances and a map of New Zealand; and important Notices to Mariners issued by the Imperial Board of Trade.

The times of sunrise and sunset for Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, and Wellington are given for every day of the year, from which the times of sunrise and sunset at Invercargill, Nelson, New Plymouth, and Westport may be easily found.

Prospective purchasers, especially those desiring a number of copies, should make early application for such, so as to ensure receiving a supply from the first issue coming to hand from the printer, as sometimes a week or more may elapse between the first and subsequent issues.

Radio Beacon to operate.

ADVERTING to Wellington Notice to Mariners No. 62 of 1926, published in New Zealand Gazette of 21st October, 1926, information is hereby given that on and after the 1st December, 1926, a radio-beacon (spark system), wave length 1,000 metres, range 50 miles, which has been installed on the island on which the lighthouse is situated off Cape Maria Van Diemen, will operate as a radio fog-signal on all occasions when weather of low visibility exists at Cape Maria van Diemen and when such is apparent in the locality of Three Kings Islands.

The characteristic fog-signal will be transmitted automatically at a speed of fifteen words per minute for a period of two minutes followed by a silent interval of three minutes, viz:—

On all occasions when the radio beacon ceases to operate the following signal will be transmitted by hand at a speed of ten words per minute, repeated six times, viz.: VLU SK.

Special transmissions on other occasions: Any vessel requiring the radio-beacon to operate for the purpose of obtaining a line of position should communicate by radio with Awanui or Auckland Radio-stations in terms “Request operate Cape Maria radio-beacon commencing [Here state time in New Zealand mean time]”; upon receipt of which the radio-station will immediately instruct Cape Maria. The characteristics of the fog-beacon will then be automatically transmitted for a period of thirty minutes from commencement. A charge of 2s. against such vessel will be made by the Post and Telegraph Department for this service.

The radio-beacon does not exchange wireless signals with ships.

Position.—The radio-beacon is situated in lat. 34° 28′ 50″ S., long. 172° 38′ 45″ E. (by Admiralty Chart No. 2525).

NOTE.—Masters of vessels intercepting this fog-signal are requested to forward reports as to this signal’s effectiveness and particularly as to the details of the bearings and distances at which observations were made, to the Secretary, Marine Department, Wellington.

Reported Existence of Shoal Ground off Cape Foulwind.

CAPTAIN A. Selby Dalglish, master of the s.s. “Kaiapoi,” reports having obtained a sounding of 11 fathoms fine sand with a sprinkling of shell when making Westport from the westward in thick weather on the 29th October, 1926. The position of shoal sounding is given by Captain Dalglish as Cape Foulwind Lighthouse bearing south 80° east, magnetic, distant 16 miles. Captain Dalglish further reports having obtained a least sounding of 18 fathoms showing a bottom of a similar nature with Cape Foulwind Lighthouse bearing east ½ north, magnetic, distant 16 miles.
