Appointment of Judges to constitute Election Court for Trial of Election Petition.

In the Supreme Court of New Zealand.

In the matter of the Legislature Act, 1908, and the Acts amending the same.

IN exercise of the powers vested in me by the Legislature Act, 1908, and the Acts amending the same, I, Robert Stout, P.C., K.C.M.G., Chief Justice of New Zealand, do hereby nominate

The Honourable Thomas Walter Stringer and
The Honourable Henry Hubert Ostler,

two of the Judges of the Supreme Court of New Zealand, to constitute the Election Court before whom shall take place the trial of the election petition following, that is to say:—

The petition of James McCombs, of Sumner, Christchurch, Draper, against the return of Melville Edwin Lyons as a member of Parliament for the Electoral District of Lyttelton, praying that the whole of the ballot-papers used in the election for the said electoral district held on the 4th day of November, 1925, be subjected to a further recount, and that the said James McCombs be declared duly elected inasmuch as a majority of the valid votes cast were in his favour.

Importation of Wheat, Flour, &c.

Customs Department,
Wellington, 8th January, 1926.

IT is announced for public information that the Minister of Customs has decided to grant general permission for the importation of wheat, flour, wheatmeal, and ground wheat if imported on or after the 18th instant subject to the following conditions:—

  1. That such wheat, flour, wheatmeal, or ground wheat can be shown to the satisfaction of a Collector of Customs to have been ordered from abroad not later than the 7th January, 1926;

  2. That such wheat, flour, wheatmeal, or ground wheat be imported into New Zealand not later than the 31st January, 1926;

  3. That, except in the case of fowl-wheat admitted under permit free of ordinary Customs duty, all such goods shall pay the ordinary duties; and

  4. That all such goods shall comply with the regulations under the Sale of Food and Drugs Act, 1908.

Existence of Sunken Rock in Upper Harbour.

THE Auckland Harbour Board notify that a small rock, having a depth of 3 ft. over it at M.L.W.S., exists at a position (approx.) bearing 015°, distant 120 ft. from the beacon which marks the large rock in the channel off Birkdale Wharf in Waitemata River,

Vessels frequenting the upper harbour are warned to give the beacon a wide berth; and, when passing the beacon on either side not to approach it within a distance of 200 ft.

Sale of Unclaimed Property.

Engineers Registration Act, 1924.—Examinations.

IN accordance with the regulations issued under section 16 of the above Act the first examinations will be held in April, 1926.

Entries for these examinations close on 31st January, 1926. Entrance forms received after that date cannot be considered. Syllabus of examinations can be obtained on payment of 1s. Entrance forms will be supplied on request to the Registrar, Engineers Registration Board, Wellington.

Unless applications for registration have already been considered by the Board, all applications for examination must be accompanied by applications for registration made out on the proper forms.

Examination fee must also accompany entrance form

I, ALLAN FRANCIS WATERS, Returning Officer for the election of a member of the Nelson Land Board, do hereby notify the result of the poll taken on the 17th day of December, 1925, to be as follows:—

Number of valid votes, 674; number rejected as informal, 33; total number of votes recorded, 707.

And I hereby declare the above-named Robert Patterson, having received the greatest number of valid votes, to be duly elected a member of the Nelson Land Board.
